The Spirit Kingdom’s halls faded behind them as Koji and Kael walked through a forest bathed in perpetual twilight. The trees were vast and silver, their branches whispering in a language Koji couldn’t quite understand. Every step seemed to echo, as though unseen voices were listening.
“The Cavern of Echoes…” Kael said quietly. “Few dare to enter. Fewer return.”
Koji gulped. “That’s… comforting.”
Kael’s lips curved in the faintest smirk. “Do not fear. The puzzles test more than strength. They are designed to measure worth. If you are truly the bearer of the Eyes, then you can succeed.”
Koji touched his glowing eye, the shifting colors faint beneath his hand. “I still don’t understand why I was chosen. I never asked for this.”
Kael glanced at him, his gaze unreadable. “Fate does not ask. It simply chooses.”
Soon, they reached a jagged cliff where a massive cavern mouth yawned like a beast. The air pouring out was cold, damp, and heavy with whispers. Torches lit themselves as the two approached, revealing a stone arch marked with glowing runes.
Koji shivered. “It feels like it’s watching us.”
“It is,” Kael said simply. “The Cavern listens to the heart. Speak lies or falter in resolve, and it will consume you.”
They stepped inside. The cavern walls shimmered with crystalline stone, reflecting countless versions of themselves. Every breath echoed unnaturally, like a chorus of voices repeating their words.
Suddenly, the path split into three tunnels. From the darkness, a booming voice filled the chamber, vibrating through their bones.
“One path leads to the truth. One path leads to death. One path leads you astray. Choose wisely, bearer of the Eyes.”
Koji froze. His chest tightened. “W-what do we do? How are we supposed to know which way is the right one?”
Kael tilted his head. “Listen. The Cavern speaks in echoes. That is its trial.”
Koji closed his eyes, straining his ears. At first, all he heard was his own breathing and the drip of water. But then… faint whispers emerged. From the left tunnel: “Coward… coward…” From the right: “Power… power…” From the center: silence.
Koji’s hand trembled. “It’s trying to mess with me. The left one insults me… the right one tempts me. The middle—” He stopped. His glowing eye flickered, showing a faint golden glimmer in the center path, like a heartbeat pulsing in the dark.
He swallowed hard. “The center. It has to be the center.”
Kael studied him, then nodded. “Trust your eye, Koji. That is its purpose.”
Together, they stepped into the middle tunnel. The air grew heavier, the silence pressing against their ears. Then, suddenly, light exploded around them, and the whispers faded into nothing.
They stood before an ancient stone tablet, glowing with runes. Words etched themselves into the surface as if written by invisible hands:
“The first puzzle: To lead is to follow, to win is to yield. What is the key to unity?”
Koji’s throat went dry. “A riddle…”
Kael folded his arms, his expression calm. “And your first true test.”
Koji stared at the glowing runes, his heart pounding. What is the key to unity…?
