The city streets were eerily quiet as Chen Wei and Yunxi fled into a narrow alleyway. Her hand clutched his tightly, her fingers cold but firm. The memory of the masked attackers lingered like a shadow in Chen Wei’s mind. He couldn’t shake the feeling that danger was following them at every step.

“Chen Wei… you shouldn’t have seen that,” Yunxi whispered, her voice trembling. “It’s not safe for you to be involved.”

Chen Wei shook his head, his eyes serious. “I made a promise. You said no one would find you, but I’ll face it with you. I don’t care who’s coming.”

Yunxi stopped, turning to face him. Her glowing eyes reflected both fear and something deeper—an emotion she hadn’t allowed herself to feel in years. “You don’t understand… I wasn’t meant to stay in this world. My enemies… they’re relentless. If they catch me, it won’t just be me. You… you’ll be in danger too.”

Before Chen Wei could respond, a black van screeched to a halt at the end of the alley. Doors flew open, and the masked figures poured out, moving with inhuman speed. Yunxi’s body flared with a blue aura, and Chen Wei instinctively shielded his eyes.

“They won’t stop until they get me,” she murmured. “Run!”

But Chen Wei refused. Instead, he grabbed a nearby metal pipe, standing between her and the intruders. “I’m not leaving. Not without you.”

Yunxi’s eyes widened. She wasn’t used to people—especially humans—defying the rules of her world. Yet, something in her chest fluttered at his courage. She unleashed a controlled pulse of energy, pushing the attackers back. The force shattered windows and sent dust flying through the alley.

Chen Wei ducked and jumped to the side, narrowly avoiding the blast. When the dust settled, the masked figures were gone, but the faint hum of tracking devices still lingered in the air.

Yunxi sank to her knees, exhausted. Chen Wei knelt beside her, placing a hand on her shoulder. “It’s okay. We made it… for now.”

Her eyes softened, and she allowed herself to lean into him. “You don’t know what you’ve gotten yourself into. You’re not supposed to be part of this… but now… you are.”

Chen Wei smiled faintly, brushing wet strands of hair from her face. “Then I’ll be part of it. Whatever comes, I’ll face it with you. You don’t have to be alone.”

Outside the alley, the city lights flickered under the night sky. Yunxi’s glow dimmed as she whispered, almost to herself, “Maybe… staying here isn’t a mistake after all.”

Chen Wei didn’t respond, but the protective warmth in his gaze spoke louder than words. In that moment, amidst danger and uncertainty, a fragile bond formed between them—a bond that neither time, nor enemies, could easily break.

But in the shadows, someone watched, noting their location. A cold voice spoke into a communicator: “They’ve found her. Prepare the retrieval team. No mistakes this time.”

Yunxi shivered, unaware that the next battle would come sooner than either of them expected.
