episode 5

The morning sun filtered through the curtains, painting the small apartment in warm golden light. Chen Wei was already awake, brewing tea, his mind replaying the previous night’s chaos. Yunxi slept on the couch, exhausted, her normally glowing eyes now dimmed. Despite her fatigue, he couldn’t stop staring—her presence had become a gravity he couldn’t resist.

“Yunxi…” he murmured, gently shaking her shoulder. “It’s morning. You should eat something.”

She stirred, blinking sleep from her eyes. “I… I don’t want to put you in danger,” she whispered, her voice trembling.

Chen Wei shook his head, setting the tea aside. “Danger or not, we face it together. I promised you that. You’re not alone anymore.”

Her lips quivered, and she looked away, battling an internal struggle. “I wasn’t always like this. I didn’t choose this life… or you. My past… it’s dangerous, and it follows me no matter where I go.”

Chen Wei took a deep breath, sitting beside her. “Then tell me. I can’t help if I don’t know what we’re dealing with.”

Yunxi hesitated, glancing at the faint scar along her wrist. Her fingers hovered over it, tracing the lines as if they carried memories she couldn’t speak aloud. “I’m not from this world,” she finally said. “I… I was trained for a mission, but I escaped. My people—some of them—want me back… and they won’t stop until they do.”

Chen Wei felt the weight of her words, but he didn’t flinch. “I don’t care where you come from. Human, alien… whatever it is. You’re the girl I care about. That’s all that matters.”

Her eyes widened at the sincerity in his voice. For a moment, the walls she had built around herself crumbled. She wanted to tell him everything, to let him in, but fear held her back. “If they find you…” she whispered. “I can’t protect you if you’re involved.”

Chen Wei reached for her hands, holding them firmly. “Then I’ll learn to fight, to survive, whatever it takes. I’m not leaving you.”

A long silence passed between them. Outside, the city moved on, unaware of the storm lurking in the shadows. Yunxi finally allowed herself a small, tentative smile. It was the first genuine smile she had given in years, and Chen Wei felt a warmth in his chest he couldn’t explain.

Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the street below. Both of them froze. Yunxi’s body tensed, energy flaring faintly around her. Chen Wei grabbed her hand. “Whatever it is… we face it together.”

Looking into his determined eyes, Yunxi realized something she hadn’t admitted even to herself: maybe, just maybe, staying in this world—and with him—wasn’t a mistake.

But deep inside, a cold and calculating voice whispered from afar, tracking their every move: “She has allies now… eliminate them both. Failure is not an option.”

Yunxi shivered, sensing that the real battle had only just begun.
