Blood Ties: When Trust Breaks

Chapter Two — Night of Falling Blades

The attack began before the rooster’s first cry.

Yun Jian woke to the smell of smoke.

Not the comforting scent of hearth fire—but thick, choking, and wrong.

He reached for his sword before he fully opened his eyes. Years of training left no space for confusion. Outside his chamber, steel clashed against steel. A scream cut through the corridor—then abruptly ended.

“Assassins!” someone shouted.

Jian pushed open the doors and stepped into chaos.

The Yun Estate was burning.

Flames devoured wooden beams, turning carved dragons into collapsing shadows. Soldiers in black armor stormed the courtyard, their movements precise and coordinated. This was no bandit raid. This was military execution.

Jian cut down the first attacker who rushed him. His blade moved cleanly, without wasted motion. Blood sprayed across the stone tiles, mixing with fallen plum blossoms now trampled into the ground.

“Protect the General!” a loyal guard yelled.

But it was too late.

At the center of the courtyard, General Yun Liang stood surrounded.

Arrows pinned his armor to the earth.

He was still standing.

Even with blood soaking through iron plates, he did not kneel.

Jian’s chest tightened. “Father!”

He lunged forward, slicing through two soldiers blocking his path. Sparks flew as blades met. His arms burned from impact, but he did not slow.

Then he saw something that made his steps falter.

At the edge of the courtyard stood Yun Kaito.

Unharmed.

Untouched.

And beside him—an Imperial Commander wearing the sigil of the Crown Prince.

The commander raised a scroll.

“By decree of His Highness, the Yun family is charged with treason. Conspiracy against the throne. Execution is authorized.”

Jian’s mind went cold.

Treason?

Impossible.

Their family had defended the empire for generations.

He looked at Kaito.

Their eyes met across the burning courtyard.

For a moment, Jian searched for denial. For anger. For shock.

Instead, he found calm.

Kaito stepped forward slowly, his sword drawn—but not against the invaders.

Against Jian.

“I told you,” Kaito said quietly, almost gently, “blood protects blood.”

Confusion shattered into horror.

“You forged evidence?” Jian demanded.

Kaito’s expression hardened. “I secured survival.”

Behind them, General Yun finally fell to one knee.

“Run… Jian…” his father rasped.

But escape was no longer an option.

Imperial archers lined the rooftops.

Flames boxed them in.

Jian parried Kaito’s first strike on instinct. The impact rang through his bones.

“You would destroy our name for ambition?” Jian growled.

“Our name was already marked for death,” Kaito replied, pressing harder. “I chose to stand with the future Emperor.”

Steel screeched.

For the first time in their lives, the brothers fought without restraint.

Every move they knew about each other became a weapon.

Jian anticipated Kaito’s footwork.

Kaito predicted Jian’s defense.

Around them, the Yun Estate crumbled.

Finally, an explosion from the collapsing west wing separated them. Smoke engulfed the courtyard, forcing soldiers to retreat temporarily.

Through the haze, Kaito’s voice echoed:

“Live if you can, brother.”

When the smoke cleared—

Jian was gone.

By sunrise, the Yun clan was declared extinct.

But somewhere beyond the northern forest, a wounded swordsman staggered into exile.

And in the capital city, Yun Kaito knelt before the Crown Prince, his loyalty sealed in blood.

Trust had broken.

War between brothers had only just begun.
