Blood Ties: When Trust Breaks

Chapter Five — The Golden Cage

The Imperial Palace glittered like a jewel beneath the spring sun.

Red pillars rose toward painted ceilings carved with dragons and clouds. Courtiers moved in silks and whispers, their smiles sharp as hidden blades. Music floated through the air, soft and elegant—masking the cruelty beneath.

Yun Kaito stood among them in black military robes, the gold insignia of a newly appointed Commander resting against his chest.

Applause echoed through the grand hall.

The Crown Prince had called for celebration.

“For loyalty,” the Prince announced, raising a jade cup. “For those who place the empire above blood.”

Eyes turned toward Kaito.

He bowed with flawless composure.

Inside, something tightened.

The Crown Prince was young—but not naive. His beauty was refined, almost gentle. Yet his gaze was colder than winter steel.

After the banquet, Kaito was summoned privately.

The Prince stood by an open window overlooking the capital.

“Commander Yun,” he said lightly, “you have served me well.”

Kaito knelt.

“It is my honor, Your Highness.”

The Prince turned slowly. “Is it?”

Silence stretched.

“You betrayed your father without hesitation,” the Prince continued, voice soft. “Such decisiveness is admirable.”

Kaito did not lift his head.

“My loyalty belongs to the throne.”

“Good,” the Prince replied. “Because loyalty is fragile.”

He walked closer.

“Do you know why I ordered the Yun clan destroyed?”

Kaito’s pulse remained steady, though his mind sharpened.

“Because my father—the Emperor—trusted your family too much,” the Prince said calmly. “Heroes inspire armies. Armies inspire ambition.”

He tilted Kaito’s chin upward with the edge of a folded fan.

“I remove threats before they bloom.”

There it was.

Not justice.

Not evidence.

Fear.

The Yun clan had been too respected. Too powerful.

The Prince stepped back.

“And yet,” he added casually, “your brother’s body was never found.”

For the first time, a flicker crossed Kaito’s expression.

The Prince noticed.

A slow smile curved his lips.

“If Yun Jian lives,” the Prince said quietly, “he will come for you first. Blood seeks blood.”

Kaito met his gaze evenly.

“Then I will be ready.”

But when he left the chamber, his steps felt heavier.

Days later, a convoy transporting imperial silver was ambushed outside the eastern gates.

The attackers moved like shadows.

Precise. Efficient.

No unnecessary deaths.

Only the corrupt officials escorting the silver were disarmed and left bound to trees.

On the lead carriage, carved into the wood—

A single symbol.

A plum blossom.

Kaito stared at the report in silence.

The officers around him waited for orders.

“Double patrols,” he commanded. “Quietly.”

He dismissed them quickly.

Alone in his quarters, he unfolded a small silk cloth hidden within a wooden chest.

Inside lay a dried plum blossom petal.

From the night of the oath.

His fingers tightened around it.

“You’re alive,” he murmured softly.

Across the capital rooftops, a masked figure stood beneath the moon.

Yun Jian watched the palace towers from afar.

He had seen the Crown Prince’s carriage that afternoon.

He had seen Kaito riding beside it.

The distance between them felt larger than mountains.

But not unreachable.

Jian’s voice was steady beneath the mask.

“This empire feeds on fear,” he whispered. “And I will cut its roots.”

Behind palace walls, the Crown Prince looked out at the same moon.

And smiled.

Because he wanted Yun Jian to return.

War between brothers would only strengthen his throne.

The cage was golden.

But it was still a cage.

And soon—

Its doors would close on all of them.
