Marked by the Hockey Alpha

The Beast they created

There I was sitting across the table from the board. The sports board to be precise. I had done it again. Lost control of my temper.

"How many times are we going to do this Caleb?"

A shrugged frustrated voice called out to me. It was my father.

I was tired of him with all sincerity. I was sick of him. Who wouldn't be tired of someone who made it his life goal to diminish me at any opportunity he got.

"Answer me Caleb!"

He smashed his hands on the table. Which would have scared me but I was way past that.

"You little twat. If you're not making a mess on the ice and breaking all the rules, you're ravaging the campus like a-a-..."

"A beast"

I completed the statement and the entire room went drop dead silent.

"That's what you wanted to say right?"

I continued as I stood up and stared at him. He couldn't look me in the face. Apparently I was his disappointment. His failed experiment.

"Caleb leave"

Everyone in the room was hiding their faces at this point. I was used to it. This scene had played out way too many times.

"I'll go. It's not like you want me here anyway. It's not like I wanted to be here anyways"

I stood up. Headed for the door and banged it behind me.

This scene was so overplayed. So dramatic. I should be used to it by now but I wasn't. I pretended like it didn't bother me but it did.

I rushed back to my dorm and took off my shirt to look at the marks on my chest. The memories ran through my head like it had only been yesterday when it all happened.

Staring at it, the anger I had tried to hide resurfaced. Images of that night played in my head.

"Get the out!"

I screamed as I slammed the mirror with my fist, I didn't even feel the hurt or pain of my hand bleeding. I looked at the shards of the mirror and there it was the beast.

He was looking at me as he took over. He was my other half or my better half. The element of a failed experiment.

***

I was just ten. Ten. Who uses a ten year old for an experiment? My sick Dad.

"He's going to be different from the rest. Faster, stronger and better"

Those were the words that lingered in my father's ears before I was washed into a boiling pot of experimental chemicals.

The smile on his face was unforgettable. He stood there and watched me scream my lungs out.

Helplessly, I gave into the pain. A burning sensation on my skin. I screamed but it was useless.

"Help!"

But nobody moved; they all stood there, observing and watching a kid scream.

The pain grew numb in me. It was as if the pain had melted into my body and become part of me.
