The next morning in Nightspire was cold and gray. Aiden woke up early. His small room smelled like damp walls and old bread. He checked his phone right away.
No message from Damian.
That felt strange. Damian always sent something in the morning. A short “Morning” or a picture of coffee. Aiden stared at the empty screen for a moment, then typed quickly.
Aiden (text to Damian):
Morning. You okay after last night?
He waited. Nothing. No “seen”. No reply.
Aiden sighed and put the phone away. He pulled on his old jacket and went out.
The streets were busy with people going to work. Fog made everything look soft and blurry. Aiden walked toward the Shadow Market to meet Sera.
Sera was already at her small stall. She sold dried herbs and simple healing creams. When she saw Aiden, she waved.
“You look tired,” she said. “Bad sleep?”
“A little,” Aiden answered. He sat on a wooden box next to her. “Damian didn’t text back this morning.”
Sera raised an eyebrow. “Maybe he’s busy doing… whatever mafia kings do.”
Aiden gave a small laugh. “Yeah. Probably.”
They talked quietly. Sera made him some hot tea from her kettle. The tea tasted like mint and warmth.
Suddenly Thorne appeared. He walked straight to them. His big body blocked some of the light.
“Boss wants you,” Thorne said to Aiden. “At the old mill warehouse. Now.”
Aiden stood up. “Is everything okay?”
Thorne shrugged. “He said it’s important.”
Sera crossed her arms. “I’m coming too.”
Thorne looked at her. “He didn’t ask for you.”
“I don’t care,” Sera said. “Aiden’s not going alone.”
Thorne stared at her for a second. Then he gave a small nod. “Fine. But don’t slow us down.”
They walked through narrow alleys. The old mill warehouse was far from the market. It was big, dark, and looked empty from outside. Thorne pushed the heavy door open.
Inside it was dusty. Light came through broken windows. Damian stood in the middle of the room. He had no coat on. His sleeves were rolled up. On a long table in front of him there were knives, small bottles, and one black crystal. The crystal looked like smooth glass, but it seemed to pull in the light around it.
Damian looked up when they entered. His eyes went straight to Aiden.
“You’re here,” he said. His voice was calm, but something in it felt tight.
Aiden walked closer. “You didn’t answer my text.”
Damian looked at him for a long moment. “I was thinking.”
“About what?”
Damian didn’t answer right away. He touched the black crystal with one finger. “About this.”
Sera stepped forward. “What is that thing?”
“It’s a shadow crystal,” Damian said. “Very rare. It holds dark magic. If you touch it, it can wake up your own power… or it can burn you.”
Aiden stared at the crystal. He felt something strange inside his chest. Like a pull. Like the crystal was calling him.
“Why do you have it?” Aiden asked.
“We took it from the men last night,” Damian said. “But it’s not safe to keep. I need to know if it’s stable.”
Sera shook her head fast. “No. Don’t let him touch it, Aiden.”
Damian looked at Sera. Then back at Aiden. “I won’t force you. But if you have shadow in you… this will show it.”
Aiden felt his heart beat faster. He had always felt different. Sometimes shadows moved when he was angry or scared. He never told anyone.
“I want to try,” Aiden said quietly.
Sera grabbed his arm. “Aiden—”
“It’s okay,” he told her. “I need to know.”
Damian watched Aiden. His face didn’t change, but his eyes became darker. Inside his head he thought: Yes. Let it in. Let me see what you really are.
Aiden stepped to the table. He lifted his hand slowly. His fingers touched the crystal.
The moment he touched it, cold power rushed into him. Black shadows came out from the crystal like smoke. They wrapped around his wrist. Up his arm. They felt alive. They felt strong.
Aiden gasped. His knees went weak.
Damian moved fast. He caught Aiden around the waist with one arm. With the other hand he pressed Aiden’s hand harder against the crystal.
“Let it happen,” Damian whispered close to Aiden’s ear. “Don’t fight it.”
The shadows grew bigger. They covered Aiden’s chest. His breathing became quick.
Sera shouted, “Stop! Let him go!”
Thorne held Sera back gently. “Wait.”
Suddenly the shadows pulled back. The crystal became normal again. Aiden almost fell. Damian held him tight.
Aiden breathed hard. He looked up at Damian. Their faces were very close.
“You felt it,” Damian said softly. “Didn’t you?”
Aiden nodded slowly. “It… felt like part of me.”
Damian smiled. A small, private smile. He didn’t let go of Aiden yet. His hand stayed on Aiden’s waist.
“Good,” Damian said. “Very good.”
Sera pulled away from Thorne. “That was dangerous. You could have hurt him!”
Damian looked at her. “But I didn’t.”
Aiden stepped back a little. His legs still felt shaky. “What now?”
Damian finally let go. “Now we know you have shadow magic. And now… we protect it.”
He said “we” but his eyes said something else. They said: I will protect it. I will keep you.
Aiden didn’t notice the difference yet.
But Sera did.
And somewhere deep inside Damian, the chains around his heart pulled tighter.
He’s waking up, Damian thought.
And when he does… he will belong to me completely.
