After the fight at the docks, the air in Damian’s house felt heavy. Aiden sat on a leather couch in the big living room. His hands still shook a little. The smell of smoke and blood from the battle clung to his clothes.
Damian walked in quietly. He had changed into a clean black shirt. His hair was wet from a quick shower. He looked calm again, but his eyes were darker than usual.
“You okay?” Damian asked. He sat next to Aiden—not too close, but close enough that their knees almost touched.
Aiden nodded slowly. “Yeah. Just… that man. Vesper. He knew me. How?”
Damian looked away for a second. Then back. “He knows a lot of things. He’s been watching people with magic for years. You’re special, Aiden. Your shadows are strong. He wants that power.”
Aiden swallowed. “I don’t want to hurt anyone.”
“You won’t,” Damian said firmly. “Not if I’m here.”
Aiden looked at him. “You almost died today. Protecting me.”
Damian gave a small smile. “Worth it.”
They sat in silence for a minute. The room had only one lamp on. Shadows danced on the walls like they were listening.
Damian broke the quiet. “We need to train more. Your shadows came out today, but they were weak. If Vesper comes again, you need to be ready.”
Aiden felt nervous. “Okay. When?”
“Now,” Damian said. He stood up and held out his hand. “Come.”
Aiden took his hand. Damian’s skin was warm. Strong. He pulled Aiden up gently.
They went back to the training room. The chalk circle was still there. Damian closed the door. Locked it.
“Sit in the middle,” Damian said.
Aiden sat cross-legged on the floor. Damian sat in front of him. Their knees touched now.
“Close your eyes,” Damian told him. “Feel your heartbeat. Slow it down.”
Aiden tried. His heart was fast from everything that happened. But he breathed deep. In. Out.
“Good,” Damian whispered. “Now think of the shadows again. But this time… let me help.”
Damian reached out. He took Aiden’s hand in both of his. Then he pressed his own thumb against Aiden’s palm—hard enough to make a tiny cut. Just a drop of blood.
Aiden opened his eyes. “What are you doing?”
“Blood magic,” Damian said softly. “It connects us. Makes your shadows stronger. Trust me.”
Aiden looked at the small red drop. Then at Damian’s eyes. They were steady. Intense.
“Okay,” Aiden whispered.
Damian brought Aiden’s hand to his own mouth. He licked the tiny cut. Slow. Careful.
Aiden’s breath caught. His face got hot. It felt strange. Intimate. Wrong and right at the same time.
Damian didn’t look away. “Now feel it. My blood in you. My power.”
Something changed. Aiden felt heat rush through his arm. Then cold. Then power. Shadows poured out faster this time. Thick. Dark. They wrapped around both of them like a blanket.
Damian smiled. “Yes. Like that.”
Aiden tried to move the shadows. He made them swirl into a shield around them. Then into sharp blades. Then back to smoke.
Damian watched every move. His breathing got a little faster. “You’re a natural.”
Aiden opened his eyes. “It feels… good. Strong.”
Damian leaned closer. Their faces were only inches apart now. “You are strong. And you’re mine to train. Mine to keep safe.”
Aiden felt the word “mine” again. This time it hit harder. Like a promise. Like a warning.
He didn’t pull back.
Damian’s hand moved to Aiden’s neck. Gentle. Thumb brushing the skin under his ear.
“You did well today,” Damian said. His voice was low. Rough. “I’m proud.”
Aiden’s heart pounded. “Thanks.”
For a second it looked like Damian would kiss him. His eyes dropped to Aiden’s lips.
Then a knock on the door.
Thorne’s voice came through. “Boss. Sera’s here. She’s worried. Wants to see Aiden.”
Damian closed his eyes for a second. Like he was controlling himself. Then he pulled back.
“Tell her he’s fine,” Damian said. “He’ll come out soon.”
Thorne left.
Aiden stood up slowly. His legs felt weak—not from magic, but from whatever just happened.
“I should go see her,” Aiden said.
Damian nodded. But he caught Aiden’s wrist before he could walk away.
“Tomorrow,” Damian said. “Same time. More training.”
Aiden looked at Damian’s hand on his wrist. Then up at his face. “Okay.”
Damian let go. But his fingers lingered a second longer than needed.
Aiden left the room. His mind was spinning.
In the hallway, Sera waited. She looked angry and scared.
“Aiden!” She hugged him tight. “Are you hurt?”
“No,” he said. “I’m okay.”
She pulled back and looked at him. “What happened in there? Your face is red.”
Aiden touched his cheek. “Just… training. It got intense.”
Sera narrowed her eyes. “Intense how?”
Before Aiden could answer, Thorne came around the corner. He looked tired.
“Sera,” Thorne said. “Let the kid breathe.”
Sera turned to him. “Don’t tell me what to do.”
Thorne stepped closer. “You’re always yelling at me. But you keep coming back.”
Sera’s cheeks went pink. “I come for Aiden. Not you.”
Thorne smirked a little. “Sure.”
They glared at each other. But the air between them felt different. Like sparks.
Aiden watched them. He almost smiled. Almost.
Later that night, Aiden lay in his bed. His phone buzzed.
Damian:
Sleep well. Dream of shadows.
And me.
Aiden stared at the message. His thumb hovered over the screen.
He typed back:
Good night, Damian.
He turned off the light.
But he didn’t sleep right away.
He thought about the cut on his palm. Damian’s tongue on it. The way shadows felt when they were connected.
He touched his neck where Damian’s thumb had been.
Something inside him stirred. Not just shadows.
Something warmer. Darker.
And far away, in a tall white tower, Lord Vesper Kane sat at a desk. A glowing orb in front of him showed faint images—Aiden’s face, Damian’s hand on him.
Vesper smiled coldly.
“The bond begins,” he said to the empty room. “Soon the boy will break. And when he does… I will take what is mine.”
