Elena sat frozen in her chair, Adrian’s words echoing in her mind.
“Which of your colleagues is secretly working for me?”
“That’s impossible,” she said firmly.
Adrian watched her calmly, his expression unreadable.
“You’re sure about that?” he asked.
Elena leaned forward slightly.
“The Intelligence Bureau is one of the most secure organizations in the country. No one inside would betray us.”
Adrian chuckled softly.
“That’s what every organization believes… until the truth comes out.”
Elena clenched her jaw.
“You expect me to believe a criminal over my own team?”
Adrian shrugged.
“You don’t have to believe me.”
He stood up and walked toward the large window, looking out at the dark garden.
“But sooner or later,” he continued, “you’ll discover the truth yourself.”
Elena watched him carefully.
“Why tell me this?” she asked.
Adrian turned slightly, meeting her eyes.
“Because if there’s a traitor in your agency…”
He paused.
“…your life is already in danger.”
Elena opened her mouth to reply—
Suddenly—
BANG!
A loud gunshot shattered the glass window behind Adrian.
Elena instantly dropped to the floor.
Her training kicked in immediately.
“Sniper!” she shouted.
Another bullet hit the wall, leaving a deep crack in the marble.
Adrian moved quickly, pulling Elena behind a large pillar.
His guards rushed into the room.
“Boss!” one of them shouted.
“Find the shooter,” Adrian ordered coldly.
Several guards ran outside immediately.
Elena’s heart was racing.
“That sniper wasn’t aiming at you,” Adrian said quietly.
She looked at him.
“What?”
“The first bullet,” he continued, “was directed exactly where you were sitting.”
Elena’s mind raced.
Someone had tried to assassinate her.
But how could they know she was here?
Adrian seemed to be thinking the same thing.
“Interesting,” he muttered.
“What is?” Elena asked.
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“The only people who knew you were investigating me…”
He paused.
“…were people inside your agency.”
Elena felt a cold wave of realization.
If Adrian was right, then the sniper attack wasn’t random.
Someone had leaked her location.
Someone who wanted her dead.
A guard returned a few minutes later.
“The shooter escaped, boss.”
Adrian nodded slightly.
“Of course he did.”
Elena slowly stood up.
“I need to contact my team.”
Adrian grabbed her wrist before she could move.
“Think carefully, Agent.”
She looked at him sharply.
“What do you mean?”
“If someone inside your agency wants you dead,” Adrian said calmly, “calling them might be the worst decision you can make.”
Elena hesitated.
Her partner Mark was the first person she wanted to call.
But now…
Doubt crept into her mind.
Adrian released her wrist.
“You’re starting to understand,” he said quietly.
Elena stared at him.
“You think this proves you’re innocent?”
Adrian smirked slightly.
“I never said I was innocent.”
He stepped closer to her.
“But now you know something important.”
“What?”
Adrian’s dark eyes locked onto hers.
“In this game…”
“…you might be safer with the Mafia King than with your own people.”
Elena didn’t reply.
Because for the first time since the mission began…
She wasn’t completely sure Adrian was wrong.
