The wind was colder at the cliff’s edge.
Lyra wrapped her shawl tighter as she stared at the glowing city far below. It felt so distant… like a different world entirely. Just a day ago, her biggest worry was restless sleep and strange dreams.
Now, she was being hunted.
“You should rest,” Kael said quietly, stepping a little closer. “We’ll move at dawn.”
Lyra nodded, though she wasn’t sure sleep would come easily. Kael gathered a few dry branches and lit a small fire. Its warm glow softened the darkness around them.
For a while, neither of them spoke.
Lyra sat near the fire, her eyes fixed on the flames. “Everything happened so fast,” she said softly. “I don’t even know who I am anymore.”
Kael looked at her, his expression unreadable. “You’re still Lyra.”
“Am I?” she asked, glancing at her faintly glowing hands. “Because it doesn’t feel like it.”
The silence that followed wasn’t uncomfortable—just heavy with unspoken thoughts.
After a moment, Kael sat across from her. “Power doesn’t change who you are,” he said. “It reveals it.”
Lyra let out a small, unsure laugh. “Then I must be very confusing.”
A faint smile touched Kael’s lips—brief, but real.
It was the first time she had seen it.
Something about that made her chest feel lighter.
“Why are you helping me?” she asked suddenly.
Kael’s smile faded.
“I have my reasons.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“It’s the only one you’re getting… for now.”
Lyra frowned but didn’t push further. She could tell he wasn’t ready to share.
A sudden sharp breath escaped her as she noticed a cut on his arm, dark against his sleeve.
“You’re hurt.”
“It’s nothing.”
“It doesn’t look like nothing,” she insisted, moving closer. “Sit.”
Kael hesitated, then slowly extended his arm.
Lyra took a deep breath and placed her hand over the wound. “I don’t know if this will work,” she admitted.
“Try.”
She closed her eyes.
For a moment, nothing happened.
Then—warmth.
Soft light spread from her palm, gentle and steady. The cut slowly began to fade, as if time itself was reversing.
Kael watched silently, his gaze fixed on her.
When Lyra pulled her hand back, the wound was gone.
She blinked in surprise. “I… healed you.”
Kael flexed his arm, equally surprised. “That kind of power… it’s rare.”
Lyra looked at her hands again, but this time, she wasn’t afraid.
Just curious.
As the fire burned lower, the silence returned—but it felt different now. Softer.
Safer.
Lyra lay down, looking up at the endless sky. “They look closer tonight,” she murmured.
Kael followed her gaze.
“They’ve always been there,” he said. “You just see them differently now.”
Lyra turned her head slightly. “Do you ever feel like… they’re watching you?”
Kael didn’t answer right away.
“Yes,” he said finally. “And sometimes… guiding you.”
Lyra smiled faintly. “I hope they’re guiding me somewhere good.”
“They are,” Kael said quietly.
She looked at him, surprised by the certainty in his voice.
“And how do you know that?” she asked.
Kael met her eyes.
“Because I found you.”
For a moment, everything else faded—the danger, the fear, the unknown.
There was just the quiet crackle of the fire…
…and the space between them that suddenly didn’t feel so distant.
Lyra’s heart beat a little faster, though she didn’t fully understand why.
She turned back to the sky, hiding her smile.
Maybe this journey wasn’t just about fear and power.
Maybe… it was about something more.
