The city below looked even more breathtaking as the sun began to rise.
Golden light spread across the valley, revealing towering spires, shimmering domes, and streets that seemed to glow with magic itself. Lyra stood frozen at the edge of the cliff, her breath caught somewhere between awe and disbelief.
“It’s… beautiful,” she whispered.
Kael watched her, not the city. “It’s not as welcoming as it looks.”
Lyra glanced at him. “What do you mean?”
“You’ll see.”
They made their way down a narrow path carved into the side of the cliff. As they descended, the air grew warmer, charged with a strange energy that made Lyra’s skin tingle.
By the time they reached the gates, the city felt alive.
Tall guards in silver armor stood at the entrance, their eyes sharp and watchful. The moment Lyra stepped forward, something strange happened.
The crystal she carried pulsed.
Bright.
Uncontrolled.
The guards immediately raised their weapons.
“Stop!” one of them commanded. “State your purpose.”
Lyra froze.
Kael stepped in front of her. “We’re travelers. We seek shelter.”
The guards didn’t lower their weapons. Instead, their gazes shifted to Lyra.
“She’s the source of that energy,” another guard said.
Lyra instinctively stepped back. “I didn’t do anything—”
“She doesn’t know how to control it yet,” Kael said firmly.
That only made things worse.
A murmur spread among the guards.
“Untrained magic…”
“Dangerous…”
“She could bring them here…”
Lyra felt her chest tighten. Them.
“They’re afraid of me,” she whispered.
Kael’s jaw tightened. “They’re afraid of what they don’t understand.”
Before the situation could escalate, a calm voice spoke from behind the gates.
“Let them in.”
The guards immediately stepped aside.
A woman in deep blue robes approached, her presence quiet but powerful. Her eyes rested on Lyra, not with fear—but curiosity.
“Welcome to Astrael,” she said.
Lyra hesitated, then stepped forward slowly.
The moment she crossed the gates, a strange sensation washed over her—like the city itself was reacting to her presence.
The streets were unlike anything she had ever seen. Floating lights drifted through the air, people whispered spells under their breath, and crystals embedded in the buildings glowed softly.
Yet everywhere she walked, people stared.
Some in wonder.
Most in fear.
Lyra lowered her gaze. “They all feel it… don’t they?”
“Yes,” Kael replied. “Your power isn’t subtle.”
“I don’t want to scare anyone,” she said quietly.
“Then learn to control it.”
They were led through winding streets until they reached a tall tower at the center of the city.
Inside, the air felt heavier—older.
The robed woman turned to face them. “I am Seris, keeper of this city.”
Lyra nodded nervously. “I’m Lyra.”
“I know,” Seris said.
That made her pause.
“You carry star energy,” Seris continued. “Something this world has not seen in a long time.”
Lyra tightened her grip on the crystal. “I didn’t ask for it.”
“Power rarely asks permission.”
Kael stepped forward. “Can you help her?”
Seris studied Lyra for a long moment. “Perhaps.”
Hope flickered in Lyra’s chest.
“But understand this,” Seris added, her voice turning serious, “if you cannot control your power… you will become a danger to everyone here.”
The words hit hard.
Lyra swallowed. “Then I’ll learn.”
Seris nodded slowly. “Good.”
She turned and began walking deeper into the tower. “Your training begins now.”
Lyra glanced at Kael.
For the first time since leaving home, she felt something new.
Not fear.
Not confusion.
Purpose.
As she followed Seris, she didn’t notice the figure watching from a distant rooftop—hidden in shadow, eyes glowing faintly.
Watching.
Waiting.
And smiling.
