CHAPTER 2
The streets of Seoul were quiet after the gala, neon lights reflecting off the wet pavement from an earlier drizzle. Min Jae-Hyun walked briskly, his police jacket pulled tight against the evening chill. He couldn’t shake the memory of Dmitri Volkov’s gaze—the magnetic, predatory stare that had followed him all night.
He hated that he couldn’t stop thinking about it. His chest tightened, pulse racing at the memory of those dark gray eyes and that faint, knowing smirk. I’m not interested, he reminded himself. But even as he walked, he knew the pull was already too strong.
Across the city, Dmitri’s sleek black car cruised silently, Ivan at his side, ever vigilant. Dmitri watched Jae-Hyun from a distance, not too close, not intrusive—just enough to observe. The officer’s stubborn pride, the way he held his head high despite obvious tension, fascinated Dmitri. It made him want Jae-Hyun more.
“You think too much,” Ivan commented quietly, noting Dmitri’s focus.
“Not enough,” Dmitri replied with a smirk. “He’s… dangerous. But I like that. His resistance only makes the chase more satisfying.”
Back on the street, Jae-Hyun ducked into a small 24-hour café for warmth, hoping to distract himself with coffee and mundane noise. The door chimed behind him, and he froze.
“Coffee breaks alone?” Dmitri’s voice was smooth, low, and intimate. He leaned against the counter, arms crossed, eyes locked on Jae-Hyun.
Jae-Hyun stiffened, hand gripping his cup. “Not exactly yours to question,” he replied, trying to sound irritated. His stubborn pride wouldn’t let him show how flustered he was.
Dmitri’s smirk deepened, closing just enough distance that Jae-Hyun felt the heat radiating from him. “I’m not questioning. I’m claiming interest. Dangerous interest,” he murmured. “And you… are impossibly tempting.”
Jae-Hyun’s lips twitched, resisting, though his heart betrayed him. “Tempting? Don’t flatter yourself,” he said, though the slight quiver in his voice revealed the opposite.
Dmitri leaned casually closer, brushing a finger along the back of Jae-Hyun’s hand—possessive yet teasing, just enough to make the officer shiver.
“You resist,” Dmitri said softly. “And I like it. Every inch of your stubbornness makes it sweeter when I finally have you.”
Jae-Hyun’s stubbornness flared. “You’re insufferable,” he muttered, trying to pull away. But Dmitri’s hand stayed, firm but gentle, holding him in place.
“And you…” Dmitri’s voice dropped lower, almost a growl, “are irresistibly tempting when you fight me.”
For a moment, the hum of the café, the neon streets, even the city around them faded. It was only the two of them—the stubborn, teasing officer and the dangerous, obsessive mafia man—locked in a silent, unspoken battle of wills.
When Dmitri finally stepped back, letting go of Jae-Hyun’s hand, the officer’s chest heaved. He wanted to scold him, to step away, but he couldn’t. He had already been drawn into Dmitri’s orbit.
And Dmitri? He already knew the chase had only begun—and he had no intention of letting the stubborn police officer slip away.
