The soft chime of the cafรฉ door echoed as Alaya stepped inside, the familiar scent of coffee and warm pastries wrapping around her like a memory she never quite let go of.
For a moment, she just stood there, scanning the room, her heart quietly racing.
Then she saw him.
Jamie sat by the window, just like he used to shoulders slightly hunched, fingers wrapped around a cup that had probably gone cold minutes ago.
He looked up, almost as if he felt her presence before he saw her.
Their eyes met, and in that brief moment, everything unspoken lingered between them.
Alaya walked toward him, each step careful, measured. โHey,โ she said softly, offering a small, uncertain smile.
โHey,โ Jamie replied, his voice quieter than she remembered.
For a second, neither of them knew what to say. The noise of the cafรฉ filled the silence for them the clinking of cups, soft chatter, the hum of a machine behind the counter.
Alaya took a seat across from him. โYou got here early,โ she said, trying to ease the tension.
Jamie gave a small shrug. โYeahโฆ I guess I didnโt want to overthink it and not come at all.โ
That made her smile, just a little. โThat sounds like you.โ
He let out a breath, leaning back slightly. โIโve been doing a lot of that lately. Overthinking.โ
Alaya nodded, her hands resting in her lap. โMe too.โ
Another pause followed, but this one felt different less heavy, more honest.
Jamie looked down at his cup, then back at her. โIโm really glad you came.โ
โI told you I would,โ she said gently. โI meant it.โ
He studied her for a moment, as if trying to understand something deeper. โYou always do, donโt you?โ
Alaya hesitated, then nodded. โI try to.โ
The waiter approached, and Alaya ordered a warm drink, her voice steadier now.
When they were alone again, Jamie spoke, his tone more vulnerable.
โI didnโt realize how much I needed this,โ he admitted. โJustโฆ talking to someone who actually listens.โ
Alayaโs expression softened. โYou donโt have to go through everything alone, Jamie.โ
โI know,โ he said, though it sounded like he was still convincing himself. โI justโฆ forgot.โ
She leaned forward slightly. โThen remember this. Iโm here. Not because I have to beโbut because I want to be.โ
That seemed to settle something in him.
His shoulders relaxed, and for the first time since she arrived, he gave a genuine smile.
โThank you,โ he said quietly.
Their drinks arrived, and they both wrapped their hands around the warmth, letting it ground them.
The conversation slowly became easier small things at first, then deeper ones.
Jamie talked about how lost he felt, how much it hurt to see everything fall apart so suddenly.
Alaya listened, really listened, offering quiet reassurance when he needed it.
And somewhere between shared words and comfortable silences, something began to mend not perfectly, not completely, but enough.
As the afternoon light filtered through the window, Jamie glanced at her again and said, โI think thisโฆ this is a start.โ
Alaya smiled, her eyes warm. โYeah,โ she said softly. โIt is.โ
And for the first time in a long while, neither of them felt alone.
