The cafรฉ had started to thin out, the once-busy chatter fading into a quieter hum.
Outside, the rain had stopped, leaving the streets damp and glistening under the soft afternoon light.
Jamie glanced out the window, then back at Alaya.
โDo you ever feel like everything changed too fast?โ
he asked, his voice thoughtful. โLike one moment, things were normalโฆ and then suddenly, nothing feels the same anymore.โ
Alaya followed his gaze, watching a few people pass by outside. โYeah,โ
she admitted softly. โBut I thinkโฆ sometimes things have to fall apart a little for us to see what really matters.โ
Jamie let that sink in. He tapped his fingers lightly against his cup, a habit she remembered well.
โAnd what matters to you now?โ he asked.
The question caught her off guard.
For a moment, Alaya didnโt answer. She looked down at her drink, watching the faint swirl of steam rise into the air.
Her thoughts felt heavier than her words.
โYou,โ she finally said, quietly.
Jamie blinked, surprised not by the word itself, but by how certain she sounded.
โI meanโฆโ she quickly added, a small nervous laugh escaping her, โnot just you, but this. Us. This friendship. Being there for each other. I think I took that for granted before.โ
He studied her, something unreadable passing through his eyes. โYou never felt like that before?โ
Alaya hesitated. โI think I did. I just didnโt realize how important it was until it was gone.โ
A silence followed, but it wasnโt uncomfortable.
It was the kind that held meaning, like both of them were quietly piecing things together.
Jamie leaned forward slightly. โI messed up too, you know,โ he said. โI pushed people away.
I thought I could handle everything on my own.โ
He let out a small breath. โTurns outโฆ I canโt.โ
Alaya smiled gently. โYou donโt have to.โ
Their eyes met again, and this time, neither of them looked away.
Outside, the clouds slowly parted, letting a soft golden light spill into the cafรฉ.
It reflected in the window beside them, casting a quiet warmth over their table.
Jamie noticed it and chuckled lightly. โFeels like a movie scene or something.โ
Alaya laughed, the sound soft but genuine. โYeahโฆ a little.โ
He shook his head, smiling. โExcept we donโt know what happens next.โ
โMaybe thatโs the best part,โ she said. โWe get to decide.โ
Jamie leaned back, considering that.
For the first time in days maybe even weeks his mind felt quieter.
Not empty, butโฆ lighter.
โHey,โ he said after a moment, โdo you want to walk for a bit? Itโs not raining anymore.โ
Alaya glanced outside, then back at him. โYeah. Iโd like that.โ
They stood up, leaving a few bills on the table before heading toward the door.
As they stepped outside, the cool air greeted them, fresh and clean after the rain.
For a while, they walked side by side without saying much.
Their steps fell into a natural rhythm, like something familiar they hadnโt lost after all.
Jamie shoved his hands into his pockets. โYou know,โ he said, โI was really scared to see you again.โ
Alaya looked at him. โWhy?โ
โI thought things would feelโฆ different. Or awkward. Or like we couldnโt go back to how things were.โ
She nodded slowly. โAnd now?โ
He glanced at her, a small smile forming. โNow I thinkโฆ maybe we donโt have to go back.โ
Alaya raised an eyebrow slightly. โWhat do you mean?โ
โMaybe we justโฆ start from here,โ
he said. โSomething new. But still us.โ
She smiled, softer this time. โI think Iโd like that.โ
As they continued walking, the sky above them cleared completely, revealing a soft stretch of blue.
And with each step forward, it felt like they werenโt just moving on.....
They were moving forward, together
