Starting From Here

The sky above them stretched wider as they walked, the last traces of rain fading into the distance.

Puddles reflected the soft blue overhead, and the world felt quieter like everything had paused just long enough for them to catch up with themselves.

For a while, neither of them spoke.

But it wasnโ€™t the kind of silence that felt empty.

It was the kind that felt full of things understood without needing to be said.

Alaya glanced at Jamie from the corner of her eye.

There was something different about him now.

Not completely changed, butโ€ฆ softer.

Like the weight he had been carrying had finally shifted, even just a little.

โ€œDo you ever wish,โ€ she started, her voice careful, โ€œthat you could go back and do things differently?โ€

Jamie let out a small breath, almost like a quiet laugh. โ€œAll the time.โ€

He kicked lightly at a small stone on the pavement as they walked. โ€œBut I think if I did, I wouldnโ€™t be here right now.โ€

He glanced at her. โ€œAndโ€ฆ I donโ€™t think Iโ€™d trade this moment for anything.โ€

Alaya felt her chest tighten not in a painful way, but in something warmer, something unfamiliar.

โ€œEven after everything?โ€ she asked.

โ€œEspecially after everything,โ€ he said.

They slowed their pace as they reached a small park just a few blocks away.

The benches were still slightly damp, but the air smelled fresh like new beginnings.

Jamie stopped walking.

Alaya took one more step before realizing he wasnโ€™t beside her anymore.

She turned, her brows slightly furrowed. โ€œHeyโ€ฆ what is it?โ€

For a moment, Jamie didnโ€™t answer.

He just looked at her really looked at her, like he was trying to memorize something he didnโ€™t want to lose again.

โ€œI meant what I said earlier,โ€ he began, his voice quieter now. โ€œAbout starting from here.โ€

Alaya felt her heartbeat pick up.

โ€œI donโ€™t want things to go back to how they were,โ€

he continued. โ€œBecause we were different then. I was different.โ€

He paused, choosing his next words carefully. โ€œBut I donโ€™t want to lose you again either.โ€

The honesty in his voice made it impossible to look away.

โ€œYou wonโ€™t,โ€ Alaya said softly.

Jamie nodded, but there was still uncertainty in his eyes. โ€œI justโ€ฆ I donโ€™t want to mess this up.โ€

Alaya took a small step closer.

โ€œThen donโ€™t try to make it perfect,โ€ she said gently. โ€œJustโ€ฆ make it real.โ€

That seemed to hit something in him.

For a second, he just stood there, taking it in.

Then, slowly, a small but genuine smile appeared on his face the kind that didnโ€™t feel forced or guarded.

โ€œReal,โ€ he repeated.

Alaya smiled back. โ€œYeah. Real.โ€

A light breeze passed between them, carrying the scent of rain and something new.

Around them, the world had fully come back to life cars passing, distant laughter, leaves rustling softly in the trees.

But in that moment, it felt like it was just the two of them.

Jamie took a step forward, closing the small space between them. Not too close just enough.

โ€œHey, Alaya?โ€ he said.

โ€œHmm?โ€

โ€œThanksโ€ฆ for not giving up on me.โ€

Her expression softened even more. โ€œI never did.โ€

And this time, when they started walking again, it wasnโ€™t out of habit

It was a choice.

A quiet, steady decision to keep going.

Together.
