HIDDEN LOVE

HIDDEN LOVE

Just Another Normal Day

Kai Rivera smiled softly as he handed his neatly written notes to classmate Rina. “Here, take mine. I already understood the lesson.”

Rina beamed with gratitude.

“Thank you, Kai! You’re always so nice to everyone.”

He waved it off and returned to his seat, but inside his chest felt heavy. No one knew his secret — he was gay. The fear of bullying and rejection kept him silent every single day. In the busy streets of Quezon City, Kai just wanted to finish senior year as a normal guy. He smiled, helped others, and never let the mask slip.

At lunch under the old acacia tree, his best friend Miggy punched his arm lightly. “You’re too kind for this world, bro. Someone’s gonna take advantage of that big heart of yours.”

Kai forced a grin. “Nah, I’m just being me.” Deep down, he wished he could tell Miggy everything, but fear clamped his mouth shut. The secret grew heavier with every passing day.

The principal announced a new college volunteer would tutor English every Wednesday. Kai barely paid attention until the door opened. A tall young man with warm eyes and an easy smile walked in. “Hi everyone, I’m Lucas Mendoza!”

During break, Lucas accidentally dropped a heavy box of workbooks. Papers scattered across the floor. Without thinking, Kai rushed over and started picking them up. “Let me help.”

Lucas knelt beside him, smiling brightly. “Thanks! You really didn’t have to, but you’re very kind.”

Kai’s heart skipped a beat. No one had ever looked at him with such genuine warmth before. After the session, Lucas stayed behind.

“I noticed you lending your notes earlier. Not everyone does that, you know.”

Kai felt his cheeks warm. “It’s nothing special.” Lucas chuckled softly. “Still, it means a lot. You make people feel seen.”

As Kai walked home that afternoon, the small flutter in his chest refused to fade. He pushed it down quickly. Just stay normal. Don’t let anyone see the truth.

That night, lying in bed, Kai stared at the ceiling fan spinning slowly. Lucas’s bright smile kept appearing in his mind. “He’s just being a good tutor,” he whispered to himself. “Nothing more.” But his heart refused to listen.

The days passed with Kai trying to focus on school. He helped Rina again when she struggled, explained things patiently, and laughed with Miggy at lunch. But every Wednesday, the tutoring session became the highlight he secretly looked forward to.

Lucas continued to notice Kai’s kindness. During one session, when a classmate was frustrated with grammar, Kai quietly offered his notes again. Lucas watched from the front with a soft smile.

After class, the rain started again. Kai shared his umbrella once more. They walked slowly, talking about small things — favorite foods, dreams for the future. Lucas shared that he wanted to become a teacher to make students feel safe.

“You already make me feel safe,” Kai whispered without thinking. Lucas’s eyes softened.

Kai’s heart raced the whole way home. The secret was getting harder to hide, even from himself.
