CHAPTER 1: A painful life

Asha was a 24-year-old young woman with a heart full of love, kindness, and sacrifice. Even though she was still young, life forced her to grow up much faster than most people her age. After the sudden death of their parents, her world changed completely. She was left alone with her younger sister, Lela, as the only family she had left.

Lela was an 18-year-old girl, beautiful and full of life, but with a very different mindset from her sister. From the moment their parents passed away, Asha became both a mother and a father to her. They had no close relatives to support them, and life became a daily struggle for survival.

Every morning, Asha woke up before sunrise. The silence of the house reminded her of the responsibilities she carried on her shoulders. She cleaned the house, washed dishes, did laundry, and made sure everything was in order before leaving. After that, she would go into town to look for casual jobs just to earn enough money for their daily needs.

Most of the time, she worked in wealthy homes as a helper, cooking, cleaning, or assisting with household chores. On other days, she carried heavy loads at the market or did any small job she could find. The work was exhausting, but she had no choice. She had to survive.

Their life was full of extreme poverty. There were days when they had nothing to eat, and nights when they went to bed hungry. Sometimes Asha would pretend she had already eaten just so Lela would take the little food they had. She sacrificed her comfort every single day just to make sure her sister was okay.

However, despite all her sacrifices, Lela saw life differently. As she grew older, she began to dislike their poor condition. She wanted beautiful clothes, expensive things, and a luxurious lifestyle like the girls she saw in town. She often complained about their situation without realizing how much pain Asha carried every day to keep her alive and safe.

One morning, Asha woke up earlier than usual. She had been given a job to help cook at a wealthy house located far from their area. It was an important job because it would help them get something to eat for the day.

She quietly prepared herself while Lela was still asleep. The house was silent except for the sound of her movements. She opened her small wallet, hoping to find something better, but reality hit her hard. Inside the wallet, there were only 2,000 shillings left. That was all they had.

Asha stared at the money for a long moment. Her heart felt heavy. She knew very well that it was not enough even for a single meal, but she had no choice. Life had forced her to accept situations she could not change.

She carefully placed the money on the table, as if trying to organize her last hope. Then she walked slowly to where Lela was sleeping. She looked at her sister with tired eyes filled with both love and sadness.

Lela was sleeping peacefully, unaware of the struggles happening outside her dreams. Asha stood there quietly, watching her for a few seconds, remembering everything she had sacrificed for her.

“I have to keep fighting… for her,” Asha whispered softly to herself.

She then quickly finished the remaining house chores. After that, she prepared herself to leave. There was no transport she could afford, so she had to walk on foot to work, carrying her exhaustion, hunger, and emotional pain with her.

As she stepped out of the house, she closed the door gently behind her. The sun was just beginning to rise, and the day was already feeling heavy. Asha walked down the road alone, her mind full of thoughts—struggles, uncertainty, and a hope for a better future that seemed far away.

But deep inside, she had no idea that this very day would mark the beginning of a new chapter in her life… a chapter filled with love, pain, secrets, and revenge that would change everything between her and her sister forever.
