The afternoon sun filtered weakly through the tall trees lining the university campus on the outskirts of Geneva. Spring rain had left the grass damp, and the air smelled of wet earth and cigarette smoke.
Austin Voss leaned against the old stone wall behind the business faculty building, a half-smoked cigarette dangling from his lips.
His white shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, sleeves rolled up over muscular forearms. Two of his closest friends,Luca and Matteo, stood with him, laughing about last weekend's party.
"Bro, you really think Sophie's going to last three months?" Luca smirked, blowing a perfect smoke ring. "She's hot, but she's not stupid forever."
Austin exhaled slowly, grey eyes cold. "She's exactly the kind of girl who believes what she wants to believe. Three months, the bet ends, I get the McLaren. Easy."
Matteo chuckled. "Just don't fall for those tits and that cheerleader ass. She's been strutting around like she's already your girlfriend."
Before Austin could reply, the click of heels on the paved path made them all turn.
Sophie.
She looked every bit the arrogant campus queen, long blonde hair cascading in waves down her back, a tight cropped sweater hugging her full, perky breasts, and a short pleated skirt that showed off long, toned legs. Her makeup was flawless, lips glossy and pouty. She spotted Austin immediately and her face lit up with that bright, trusting smile.
"Austin!" she called, hurrying over.
He dropped the cigarette, crushing it under his shoe. Without a word, he grabbed her by the waist and pulled her flush against his hard body.
Sophie gasped softly before his mouth crashed down on hers in a wet, possessive kiss. His tongue slid past her lips, deep and demanding.
She melted instantly, arms wrapping around his neck, pressing her soft curves into him with a needy little moan.
His friends snickered behind them.
Austin broke the kiss just enough to glare over Sophie's shoulder, his eyes like ice. The snickering died immediately. Luca raised his hands in mock surrender and Matteo looked away, pretending to check his phone.
Sophie pulled back slightly, cheeks flushed, lips swollen. She gazed up at him with pure adoration. "I missed you after morning classes. Are we still on for tonight? That new Italian place?"
"Yeah," Austin murmured, thumb brushing her bottom lip. "I'll pick you up at eight. Wear that black dress I like."
She bit her lip, clearly thrilled. "Anything for you." She kissed him again, softer this time, clinging tighter before finally stepping back. "I have cheer practice now. Text me?"
He gave her a nod and a smirk that looked loving to her, but was pure calculation to anyone who knew him. Sophie walked away with a sway in her hips, glancing back once with a happy wave.
The moment she was out of earshot, Luca whistled low. "Damn. She's hooked."
Austin lit another cigarette, jaw tight. "Keep your mouths shut around her. I don't need complications before I win the bet."
Meanwhile, in the modest staff quarters attached to the Voss estate, the atmosphere was heavy with tension and the faint smell of herbal tea.
Valentina sat on the edge of the worn couch, her hands twisting together in her lap. Her mother, Maria, a tired woman in her late forties with kind but exhausted eyes, sat opposite her. The doctor's letter lay open on the small wooden table between them, the one that listed the urgent surgery costs for Maria's heart condition.
"Mama…" Valentina's voice was barely a whisper, thick with unshed tears. "Mr. Theodore… he asked me to marry him."
Maria's eyes widened. She set her cup down with shaking hands. "Valentina, what are you saying?"
"He said if I marry him, he'll pay all your medical bills. The operation, the medicines, everything. We won't have to worry anymore." Her lower lip trembled. "He was very… direct. He needs an heir. And I… I'm here."
Maria reached forward and took her daughter's hands. They were ice cold. "Tesoro, you cannot do this. Not for me. Theodore Voss is a difficult man. Cold. Everyone knows about his anger. You are only nineteen. You deserve love, not… this arrangement."
Valentina looked down, tears finally slipping down her cheeks. "But you need the operation soon, Mama. The doctor said it can't wait. We have nothing left. I've been working extra just to buy your medicines. If I say no… what happens to you?"
Silence stretched between them.
Maria's eyes filled with guilt and sorrow. She had sacrificed everything to raise her daughter alone after Valentina's father disappeared. The girl was brilliant, top of her class in literature and languages, but had never been allowed to chase her own dreams because of their poverty.
"I don't want you to sell your life for me," Maria whispered, voice breaking.
Valentina lifted her head, trying to look brave even though her entire body was trembling with fear. "It's not just for you. It's for us. He said I'll never have to work like this again. I'll be able to… to help you properly. Maybe one day things will get better."
She didn't believe her own words completely, but the image of her mother collapsing again last month haunted her.
Maria pulled her into a tight hug, stroking her dark hair. "If this is truly what you choose, my heart… I will pray every day that he treats you kindly. But promise me you will protect yourself. Your heart is too soft for that house."
Valentina nodded against her mother's shoulder, silent sobs shaking her frame. The decision was made.
She would marry Theodore Voss.
