The Arrangement

Valentina's hands trembled as she carried the silver tray down the long, dimly lit corridor of the east wing. On it sat a single cup of black coffee, strong, no sugar, exactly how the staff said Theodore Voss preferred it in the evenings. Her heart pounded so violently she feared it might echo off the marble floors.

She had changed into a modest navy dress , one of the few decent things she owned. Her long dark hair was neatly braided, though a few soft strands had escaped around her face. Every step closer to the heavy oak door at the end of the hallway felt like walking toward a cliff.

She paused outside, breathing shallow. Mama's face when I told her… the relief mixed with guilt. The doctor had called again today. The surgery window was narrowing.

Before she could lose her nerve, Valentina knocked softly.

"Come in."

The voice was deep, authoritative, and unmistakably impatient.

She pushed the door open.

Theodore's bedroom was vast and masculine, dark wood panels, a massive four-poster bed with crisp black and charcoal linens, a fireplace crackling on the far wall. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the illuminated gardens.

He stood near the windows in nothing but a pair of dark trousers and an unbuttoned white shirt that hung open over his powerfully built chest and sculpted abs. His muscular arms were crossed, and his grey eyes locked onto her immediately.

Valentina's breath hitched. She had never seen a man like him this close, this exposed. Heat rushed to her cheeks.

"I… brought your coffee, Mr. Voss," she whispered, eyes fixed on the tray.

"Put it on the desk." He didn't move.

She obeyed, setting the tray down with careful movements. Her fingers brushed the edge of the polished wood as she gathered her courage.

Theodore watched her like a predator studying prey, every nervous flutter of her lashes, the way her full breasts rose and fell with anxious breaths beneath the thin fabric of her dress, the curve of her hips.

"I've made my decision," Valentina said, voice barely audible. She forced herself to look up at him. "I… I'm ready to marry you."

A heavy silence filled the room, broken only by the soft crackle of the fireplace.

Theodore's expression didn't soften. He took a slow step toward her, then another, until he towered over her petite frame. Up close, he smelled of expensive cologne, whiskey, and something darkly masculine.

"Good," he said flatly. "But let me be very clear, Valentina. This is not a love match. I need heirs. Legitimate children to secure the family line and the business. You will give me those children. In return, I will cover your mother's entire operation, hospital stay, rehabilitation, everything. The bills will be paid before the wedding."

Valentina swallowed hard, her hazel eyes glistening. She nodded shakily.

He continued, voice low and cold. "You will live here as my wife. You will share my bed when I require it. You will behave appropriately in public and not embarrass this family. But do not expect romance. Do not expect love. I am not capable of giving it, and I won't pretend otherwise. This is a transaction. Nothing more."

Her lower lip trembled. She clasped her hands tightly in front of her to hide how badly they were shaking. The reality of his words settled over her like ice water.

"H..how many children do you want?" she asked nervously, her voice cracking slightly on the last word. The question felt mortifying, clinical, like bargaining over livestock rather than her own body and future.

Theodore's gaze drifted slowly down her body, lingering on her soft curves, the gentle flare of her hips, before returning to her face. Something dark and possessive flickered in his eyes.

"At least three," he answered. "Preferably four. Sons to carry the name, but daughters would be acceptable as well. We'll start trying after the wedding. I won't force you on our wedding night if you're too frightened… but I expect compliance soon after."

Valentina's cheeks burned crimson. She looked away, tears threatening to spill. The image of lying beneath this cold, powerful man, of carrying his children while receiving nothing but his name and financial security, made her stomach twist with fear and a strange, unwanted flutter of something else.

"I understand," she whispered.

Theodore reached out and tilted her chin up with two fingers, forcing her to meet his intense gaze. His touch was firm, warm, sending an involuntary shiver through her.

"Look at me when we're making deals, Valentina. You're very beautiful. You'll make attractive children. That's why I chose you. But if you ever try to trap me, manipulate me, or run away once the ring is on your finger… my temper is exactly as bad as people say. Do we have an agreement?"

She stared into his hard grey eyes, heart breaking and racing at the same time. "Yes, Mr. Voss. We have an agreement."

He released her chin. For a brief second, his thumb brushed her lower lip almost absentmindedly, testing their softness. Then he stepped back.

"Call me Theodore. You're going to be my wife. Goodnight, Valentina."

She nodded quickly, turned, and fled the room as gracefully as her trembling legs would allow. The heavy door clicked shut behind her.

Alone in the corridor, Valentina leaned against the wall, pressing a hand to her chest. Silent tears finally escaped down her flushed cheeks.

What have I done?

Theodore stood at the window again, staring out into the night. He took a sip of the coffee she had brought, still hot, perfectly made.

A small, cold smile touched his lips.

The deal was done.

Downstairs in the west wing, Austin was getting ready for his date with Sophie, unaware of the seismic shift happening in his brother's bedroom.
