Candlelight Words

The upscale Italian restaurant La Perla overlooked Lake Geneva, its terrace glowing with warm golden lights and crystal chandeliers visible through tall glass windows. Soft jazz played in the background while the scent of garlic, truffle, and aged wine filled the air.

It was the kind of place where reservations were made months in advance, unless your last name was Voss.

Austin pulled out Sophie's chair with practiced charm. She looked stunning in the tight black dress he had requested,low-cut enough to showcase her full cleavage, short enough to draw eyes to her long legs. Her blonde hair fell in perfect waves, and her glossy lips curved into a bright, genuine smile as she sat down.

"Thank you," she said softly, almost shyly, a far cry from the arrogant cheer captain who usually snapped at underclassmen. With Austin, she transformed, eager, attentive, almost desperate to please.

He took his seat across from her, the candlelight sharpening his handsome features and highlighting the muscular line of his shoulders beneath his black button-up shirt. "You look incredible tonight."

Sophie blushed, biting her lip. "I wore it just for you. I've been thinking about this date all day."

A waiter poured expensive Chianti. Austin raised his glass. "To us."

"To us," she echoed happily, clinking her glass against his. She took a sip, then leaned forward, eyes sparkling with excitement. "So… tell me more about you. I feel like I know so little. You're always so mysterious."

Austin smirked, swirling the wine. "Not much to tell. I go to classes, help with the family business when my brother needs me, work out. That's about it."

Sophie wasn't satisfied. She reached across the table and laced her fingers with his. Her touch was warm and hopeful. "Come on, Austin. What's your favorite thing to do when you're not at college? Do you want to travel after graduation? What was your childhood like in that huge mansion? I bet it was amazing."

He gave a vague shrug, his thumb idly stroking her knuckles. "Travel sounds good. Maybe Ibiza or Mykonos this summer. Childhood was… fine. Big house, strict parents. Nothing special."

Sophie's eyes softened with sympathy. "That sounds kind of lonely, actually. My parents are always fighting, so I get it. But with you, I don't feel lonely at all." She smiled brightly, completely opening up. "You know, I act all confident at college, cheering, bossing the squad around..but when I'm with you, I just feel… happy. Like I can be myself. I've never felt this way about anyone before."

Austin's expression remained cool on the surface, but internally he noted how perfectly she was falling for it. Three months would be easier than expected.

"You're sweeter than people think," he said, lifting her hand to kiss her knuckles. "Tell me about your cheer stuff. You looked hot doing that routine last week."

She lit up, leaning closer. "Really? I was so nervous you were watching! We're preparing for nationals. It's exhausting, but I love it. The girls on the squad can be so dramatic though. Yesterday, this freshman messed up the formation and I-----" She stopped, laughing self-consciously. "Sorry, I probably sound so arrogant right now. I don't mean to be like that. It's just… being captain means I have to keep everyone in line."

Austin gave her a lazy smile. "I like when you're a little bossy."

Sophie giggled, clearly thrilled. The main courses arrived, risotto for her, steak for him. Between bites, she kept the conversation flowing, completely unlike her usual haughty demeanor.

"What about your brother Theodore?" she asked curiously. "He's so intense. Everyone's scared of him. Are you two close?"

Austin cut into his steak. "Not really. He runs things. I stay out of his way."

"And your parents? Do they like me? I mean… not that I'm thinking that far ahead or anything," she added quickly, though her hopeful eyes said otherwise.

"They'll like whoever I bring home," he replied vaguely, avoiding the truth that his mother would probably tear her apart the same way she planned to do with Valentina.

Sophie didn't notice the deflection. She was too busy gazing at him dreamily. "You're so different from the other guys on campus. They're all boys. You're a man. Strong, quiet, protective… I feel safe with you."

Under the table, her leg brushed against his. Austin let his hand rest on her thigh, squeezing lightly. She shivered with pleasure.

Later, after dessert and another glass of wine, Sophie grew bolder. "Austin… can I ask you something personal?"

He raised an eyebrow. "Go ahead."

"Do you see this..us..going somewhere serious?" Her voice was soft, almost vulnerable. "Because I do. I know it's only been a few weeks, but I've never clicked with someone like this."

For a split second, something almost like guilt flickered in Austin's cold eyes. Then it vanished.

He leaned across the table and kissed her deeply, tongue sliding against hers in a slow, wet kiss that left her breathless. When he pulled back, he murmured against her lips, "I'm here with you now, aren't I? Let's enjoy it."

Sophie melted, nodding eagerly. "Yes. I'm sorry, I'm being too much. I just really like you."

The rest of the evening passed in a blur of flirtation and lingering touches. By the time Austin drove her back to her apartment near campus, Sophie was clinging to his arm, kissing his neck in the car desperately.

"Stay the night?" she whispered hopefully.

"Not tonight, baby. Soon," he lied smoothly, giving her one last heated kiss before she reluctantly got out.

As he drove away, Austin checked his phone. A new message from Luca -How's the bet going, loverboy?

He smirked and typed back-She's already planning our future. This McLaren is mine.

Back at the Voss estate, in the quiet staff quarters, Valentina lay awake staring at the ceiling. Tomorrow she would officially accept Theodore's proposal in front of his family. The weight of it pressed on her chest like stones.
