Episode 4: Rivalry Ignited

Weeks slipped past in a blur, each day pulling Ash into a different crowd. Between soccer drills, club rehearsals, and the constant stream of parties, his phone never stopped buzzing. Invitations stacked one after another, and Ash answered them all with the same easy smile — yes, yes, yes — until it became less a choice and more a reflex.

But this time, he wasn’t alone. His cousin Tia had returned from her semester break, a sharp-eyed girl with brown hair flowing down to her abdomen. At 165 cm, she wasn’t tall, but her presence was commanding in its own way.

Tia: “You say yes to everyone, Ash. But when will you say yes to yourself?” Ash (grinning): “I’m fine, Tia. People expect me to show up. It’s easier than saying no.” Tia (rolling her eyes): “Easier doesn’t mean better. You’re burning yourself out.”

Her words lingered, though Ash brushed them off.

'The Club Competition'

The drama club competition was heating up. Performances were judged not just on talent, but charisma and presence. Ash thrived in the spotlight, dazzling crowds with his easy smile and warm energy.

But with Nik, everything changed. His tone sharpened, his words edged with rivalry.

[Ash: “You’re too stiff. Presence isn’t just standing tall.” Nik (calmly): “And yours isn’t just smiling at everyone. Presence is about being seen without trying.”]

The tension was palpable. Others whispered about the strange hostility between the butterfly and the silent flame.

Tia noticed too.

Tia: “You act like he’s your nemesis. But I think he’s the only one who makes you try harder.”

Ash (snapping): “He’s not making me try harder. He’s just… irritating.”

But deep down, he knew she was right.

'The Secret Watcher'

During rehearsals, Ash felt it again — that prickling sensation of being watched. His eyes darted around the room, but no one seemed out of place.

He shook it off, convincing himself it was stress. Yet the feeling lingered, heavy and unsettling. Somewhere, someone was watching.

'The University Star Contest'

Peer pressure pushed Ash into signing up for the University Star Contest, a prestigious event testing charisma, talent, and leadership. He didn’t want to join, but his friends insisted, chanting his name until he gave in.

When Nik heard, he scoffed. Nik: “Huh. As if you can do it.”

Ash’s chest flared with fury.

Ash: “Watch me. I’ll prove it.”

Ron laughed, enjoying the fire. Ron: “Oh, this is gold. Butterfly versus the quiet storm, round two.”

Ash’s competitive streak burned hotter than ever. He challenged Nik directly, and though Nik seemed uninterested, he eventually signed up too. Not because he wanted the spotlight, but because he refused to let anyone else stand beside Ash in it.

'Possessive Undercurrents'

Nik’s possessive streak began to show in subtle ways. He watched Ash closely during rehearsals, stepping in whenever others got too close. His gaze was sharp, territorial, though he said little.

Ash noticed but misinterpreted it as arrogance.

Ash (thinking): “He thinks he owns the stage. He thinks he owns me. I’ll show him.”

Tia, however, caught the nuance.

Tia: “He doesn’t just compete with you. He guards you. Haven’t you noticed?”

Ash (laughing): “Guard me? He’s just arrogant.” Tia: “No. He’s.......... forget it, you’re too blind to see it.”

Ash dismissed her words, but unease stirred in his chest.

After another rehearsal, Ash slipped into the washroom, splashing water on his face. The prickling sensation returned — the watcher’s eyes. He ignored it, shaking his head.

The door creaked open. Nik entered. Deja vu if you may call it that thought Ash.

Nik: “You’re reckless when you’re challenged. Don’t let peer pressure drag you down.”

Ash (snapping): “Don’t act like you care. You’re just waiting to see me fail.”

Nik (quietly): “No. I’m waiting to see you fight.......... fight me (a smug smile).”

Ash had never seen nik make that expression ever.

The words hung heavy in the air. Ash’s chest tightened, unsettled by the raw conviction in Nik’s voice. He stormed out, refusing to let it show.

That night, Ash lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. His phone ignored.

All he could think about was Nik’s steady gaze, his possessive aura, his quiet challenge. He was furious.

Ash (thinking): “He unsettles me. He challenges me. He makes me fight harder. So annoying”

Meanwhile, in the shadows, the secret watcher lingered — unseen, patient, waiting. But who? and WHY??
