Episode 5: The Fever of Truth

The University Star Contest began with a buzz that swept across campus. For Ash, it was another stage to conquer, another crowd to dazzle. He stepped into the spotlight with his usual charm, his smile lighting up the hall, his voice carrying with practiced ease.

But this time, something was different. The audience’s eyes weren’t only on him. They were drawn to Nik — the boy who barely spoke, who wore oversized clothes, who seemed aloof. Yet when Nik stood on stage, his silence became power. His presence was magnetic, his gaze unshakable.

Votes started leaning toward Nik. Whispers spread.

“He’s mysterious.” “He doesn’t even try, but look at him.”

Ash clenched his jaw. Nik didn’t talk to anyone, didn’t acknowledge the attention, didn’t bask in the praise. He spoke only to Ash, and that made it worse.

Ash (thinking): “He’s stealing the spotlight without lifting a finger. And he’s forcing me to bare the side I’ve buried — the sharp, rude edge I swore I’d keep hidden.”

'The Final Rounds'

The contest stretched across multiple rounds — talent, charisma, leadership. Ash pushed harder, his energy burning hotter, his smile sharper. He laughed louder, moved faster, spoke brighter.

Nik remained steady, his quiet intensity unshaken.

By the end, Ash won — but only by 55 votes. The crowd cheered, his friends lifted him high, but inside, victory felt hollow.

Ash (thinking): “I won, but he made me fight like never before. He dragged out the raw side I keep buried. Why does he do this to me?”

'The Celebration Party'

The drama club threw a celebration that night. Music thundered, drinks flowed, laughter echoed through the halls.

Ash, feverish and pale, told no one. He forced himself to attend, his body burning but his pride refusing to stay home.

Nik arrived too, awkward and uncomfortable, his posture withdrawn. He lingered near the edges, watching the chaos unfold.

Ash scanned the room. Couples were pressed against walls, kissing sloppily. Some slipped away into rooms for things he didn’t want to imagine. Others flirted recklessly, drunk beyond reason.

Ash’s stomach turned. “This isn’t love. This is emptiness dressed as fun.”

'The Games Begin'

The club leader shouted over the music: “Let’s play! Never Have I Ever!”

Groans and cheers filled the room. Bottles clinked, glasses raised.

Nik shook his head when asked to join.

Nik: “No.”

But when a drunk girl stumbled and nearly fell onto Ash, Nik moved instinctively. He sat two seats away, positioning himself so he could block the path of people passing. His presence was quiet but protective.

The questions rolled on. Someone teased Ash: “Ever been in love?”

Laughter erupted. A name was thrown — Tia. “She’s pretty, isn’t she? Don’t tell me it’s her!”

Ash stiffened. They didn’t know she was his cousin.

Nik’s hand twitched. His glass slipped, crashing lightly against the table. The sound cut through the laughter. The topic shifted quickly, tension dissolving into drunken chatter.

'The Idea of Love'

The game turned deeper. “What’s your idea of love?” the leader asked, pointing to random people.

Answers spilled out, shallow and careless. “Good looks.” “Rich enough to spoil me.” “Hot body, strong drive.” “If he leaves, I’ll find another.”

Ash’s fever burned hotter. His chest tightened with disgust. “Is this what love means to them? A transaction? A game? A body to use?”

Finally, the question turned to him. But by then, most of the group had collapsed into drunken stupors, heads on tables, voices slurred.

Ash sat red-faced, feverish, his body trembling. He hadn’t drunk much, but the heat inside him was unbearable.

'Nik Steps In'

Nik noticed. His eyes sharpened, his posture straightened. Without a word, he rose and carried Ash out of the party.

Ash mumbled weakly, half-conscious. Nik: “Your address?” Ash whispered it, barely audible.

On the way, Nik’s voice softened.

Nik: “Ash… what’s your idea of love?”

Ash’s eyelids fluttered. His lips moved, but the words were incoherent, fevered blabber. He drifted into sleep before finishing.

Nik didn’t press again. His tone had been gentle, softer than Ash had ever heard. He knew Ash wouldn’t remember.

They reached Ash’s house. Nik guided him to enter the code, helped him wash up, and made sure he lay on his bed.

He stood for a moment, watching Ash’s flushed face, his restless breathing. Then he left quietly, his expression unreadable.

Outside, unseen in the shadows, the secret watcher lingered. Patient. Silent. Observing.
