Black Veil

Black Veil

The House That Never Locked It's Doors

Long before newspapers called the Vespers criminals...Long before politicians whispered their name behind closed doors...Long before fire turned memories into smoke...There stood a mansion on the northern cliffs overlooking the sea

People simply called it—

"The Vesper's Estate"

From the outside, it looked less like a mansion and more like a palace that had wandered out of another century Its walls were built from pale gray stone that glowed silver whenever it rained

Towering windows reflected the orange ocean

At sunrise, hundreds of white roses opened across the gardens, filling the air with a fragrance so familiar that every servant claimed they could identify a Vesper by scent alone full of power

Behind the estate stretched orchards, greenhouses, a glass conservatory, horse stables, a private library older than most universities, and a quiet lake where swans drifted like living clouds.

Visitors often assumed the estate must be heavily guarded

And it infact was

Hidden cameras watched every path.

Security teams worked around the clock.

The cliffs themselves were monitored by drones.

But the front gate...

Almost never remained locked.

That surprised everyone.

The answer was simple.

Victor Vesper once told a journalist with a smile,

"A locked gate tells people you're afraid."

"I'd rather they think they're welcome."

The journalist laughed

It seemed like a joke, but it wasn't

Every morning in the mansion before the clocks struck seven the mansion awakened in its own peculiar rhythm

The kitchen came alive first

Coffee beans were ground by hand

Pastries cooled on marble counters while chefs argued over recipes they'd perfected decades ago

The old grandfather like clock in the entrance hall chimed exactly seven times

Right on cue a voice echoed through the mansion

"Has anyone seen Young Master Noah?"

The question was asked every single morning

And every morning...

The answer was exactly the same

"No."

Mrs. Eleanor Finch, the seventy-two-year-old housekeeper who had served three generations of the Vespers marched down the corridor with all the determination of a military commander

She carried a silver breakfast tray balanced perfectly on one hand

"That boy," she muttered. "One day he'll sleep through an earthquake."

Two younger maids hurried after her trying to control their laughter

"He was reading until two in the morning again."

"He promised Master Victor he'd sleep earlier."

Mrs. Finch sighed

"And Master Victor promised he'd stop spoiling him."

She stopped before a pair of tall doors

She pushed the door open without knocking

The curtains were still drawn.

Books lay scattered across the floor.

A chessboard rested beside the window, frozen halfway through a game Noah had apparently been playing against himself.

Three notebooks covered in tiny, meticulous handwriting sat open on the desk

The bed...was empty

Mrs. Finch froze in surprise

The maids gasped in terror

"Young Master?"

No response from the other side

Mrs. Finch set the tray down.

"Not again..."

She marched to the balcony doors and threw them open searching every corner of the room

One of the maids looked over the railing

"There!"

Far below on the sprawling lawn a boy with dark, messy hair sat beneath the oldest oak tree on the estate

His back rested against the trunk

A thick leather-bound book lay open across his knees

Completely absorbed, he didn't notice the world around him

Mrs. Finch closed her eyes.

"Of course."

The morning breeze turned another page of his book before he could

He frowned in disbelief

"I wasn't finished."

As though the wind might apologize to him

It didn't of course

Instead....

A shadow fell across the page of the book

"You skipped breakfast again."

Noah looked up and

Standing over him was a tall man in a charcoal suit with sleeves rolled to his elbows

Victor Vesper

To the outside world, Victor was a businessman whose smile unsettled ministers and whose phone calls could topple billion-dollar corporations and was the sole person who built the empire of Vesper family

At home...

He was simply the man who always remembered exactly which books Noah wanted for his birthday.

Victor folded his arms

"So."

Noah blinked innocently.

"Ahem....So?"

"I've been informed," Victor said with exaggerated seriousness, "that a mysterious creature escaped from its bedroom again."

Noah glanced toward the mansion.

"Did it?"

"It also appears to have stolen breakfast."

"oh is that so?!"

Victor nodded gravely

"A very dangerous criminal."

A tiny smile tugged at Noah's lips

Victor noticed it immediately

And just like that his Mission of making his Dad less angry was accomplished.

Victor sat beside him beneath the oak without caring that his expensive trousers touched the grass.

For a while, neither of them spoke

Father and son watched the sea glitter beneath the morning sun

Finally Victor broke the silence saying

"What are you reading?"

"The Prince."

Victor raised an eyebrow

"You're just thirteen."

"I know."

"And what have you learned from the book?"

Noah closed the book thoughtfully and said,

"Most rulers fear betrayal from their loved ones."

Victor nodded.

"And?"

"But They should fear loneliness more."

For a long moment, Victor simply stared at his son

Then he smiled—not with pride, but with something quieter

A Hope that would continue his legacy

Somewhere beyond the estate gates, a black sedan rolled toward the mansion

Inside an impatient blond haired boy bounced in his seat for what felt like the hundredth time

"How much longer?"

His bodyguard sighed

"Five minutes."

"You said that ten minutes ago."

"Traffic."

"There isn't any traffic."

"There could have been."

The boy groaned dramatically

"I'm going to die of boredom before we get there."

The bodyguard smiled despite himself.

"No, Young Master."

"You'll survive."

The boy pressed his forehead to the window excitedly

Then, as the silver gates of Vesper House came into view....

A grin spread slowly across his whole face.

"Noah Vesper..."

He whispered to himself

"I'm back."

The charming young boy pressed both hands against the window

"They planted more..."

His bodyguard glanced outside

"They renovate the gardens every year."

"They didn't before."

"They do now."

The boy smiled to himself

Noah would probably complain

He always said flowers looked prettier when they grew however they wanted instead of in perfectly measured rows

The sedan stopped before the front entrance

Before the chauffeur could open the door...

The rear door flew open by itself.

A fourteen-year-old boy sprinted out.

"Young Master Lucien!"

The bodyguards immediately chased after him.

"Slow down!"

"No running!"

"Your father specifically warned—"

Lucien ignored every single word

BOOM!

The dining room doors slammed open so violently that every servant jumped

"NOAH!"

Several maids gasped

Mrs. Finch didn't even turn around

"Good morning, Young Master Lucien."

Lucien grinned sheepishly

"...Morning."

Noah calmly continued eating his breakfast without even looking up

Lucien stared

"...Seriously?"

"...You're not even going to greet me?"

No response

Lucien walked closer

"...Noah."

Still nothing

He leaned across the table down

"...Noah."

Lucien dropped himself into the chair beside Noah without invitation

He reached for a croissant

Mrs. Finch smacked his hand away with a wooden spoon

"Wash your hands."

"I touched the car."

"Exactly."

"They're clean."

Mrs. Finch stared

Lucien surrendered

"...Fine."

As he disappeared toward the washroom, Noah quietly slid his untouched croissant onto the Lucien's empty plate

Mrs. Finch pretended not to notice

Three months had passed since Lucien's last visit.

Noah had grown used to the silence.

His days followed the same rhythm.

Morning lessons.

Afternoon strategy sessions with his father.

Evenings in the library.

Late nights beneath the old oak tree with a book balanced on his knees.

But there was one thing he couldn't ignore.

His father smiled less.

Victor Vesper had always returned home before dinner, no matter how important the meeting.

Recently...

The dining table remained half-empty until long after the soup had gone cold

Far across the city Lucien sat in the back seat of his family's car

He looked down at the chess knight Noah had carved from oak for his birthday years ago

He turned it over in his hand face smiling

Unaware that somewhere in the shadows, someone had already decided that one day...

The betrayal was yet happen

But its first crack...Had already appeared
