Morning never truly came to Windmere.
Although the sun rose beyond the mountains, its golden light struggled to break through the curtain of crimson clouds that had gathered overnight. Ash drifted lazily through the air, settling upon rooftops and empty streets like gray snow.
The village had become a place of whispers.
"The Fallen King is coming."
"He'll destroy us."
"We're all going to die..."
Lyra stood beside the window of her grandmother's cottage, unable to take her eyes off the distant mountains. Somewhere beyond them marched an army that had erased kingdoms from history.
And somehow...
Its king was looking for her.
She still couldn't understand why.
Every time she closed her eyes, another fragment of the strange dream returned.
A palace filled with music.
A warm hand holding hers.
A man laughing beneath blooming white roses.
Then the image shattered into flames.
"Lyra."
Her grandmother's voice pulled her back.
The old woman stood by the fireplace, her face unusually pale.
"You need to leave."
"What?"
"Today."
Lyra frowned.
"I can't leave you here."
"You must."
"But—"
"No."
It was the first time in years her grandmother had spoken so firmly.
"There are truths I have hidden from you because I hoped this day would never come."
Silence filled the room.
The old woman walked toward a wooden chest that had remained locked for as long as Lyra could remember.
With trembling hands, she unlocked it.
Inside lay a folded white cloak, an ancient silver sword, and a worn leather journal.
She lifted the journal carefully.
"I promised I would never open this..."
"But promises lose their meaning when fate comes knocking."
She handed it to Lyra.
Across the faded cover, elegant handwriting read:
For the Child of Dawn.
Lyra's heartbeat quickened.
"Who wrote this?"
"I don't know."
"You don't?"
Her grandmother shook her head.
"The night I found you, you were lying beneath the Moon Tree at the edge of Evermist Forest."
"You found me?"
"I was never your real grandmother."
The words struck Lyra harder than any blade.
"I... what?"
"You were only a baby."
"You wore that silver pendant."
"You had this journal beside you."
"And there wasn't another soul for miles."
Tears welled in Lyra's eyes.
"So... I've never known my real family?"
"I'm sorry."
"I searched."
"I asked travelers."
"I even visited the royal archives."
"But no one had ever seen the symbol on your pendant."
The room became painfully quiet.
Outside, thunder echoed across the valley.
Rowan entered the cottage without knocking.
"We don't have much time."
He looked toward the horizon.
"They're closer."
A loud bell rang from the center of the village.
Then another.
And another.
The warning bells.
"They're here."
The ground trembled beneath their feet.
Outside, villagers screamed.
Lyra rushed outside with Rowan.
Black banners appeared between the trees.
Hundreds...
No...
Thousands of silent soldiers emerged from the forest.
None spoke.
None even breathed.
They marched like shadows given human form.
At their front rode a knight dressed in black armor.
Unlike Kaelith, this warrior wore no crown.
His face was hidden beneath a steel mask shaped like a wolf.
A crimson cape flowed behind him.
He raised one hand.
The undead army stopped instantly.
The masked knight's voice echoed across Windmere.
"By order of His Majesty, King Kaelith Draven..."
"We seek the girl known as Lyra Ashwyn."
"No one else needs to die."
"Hand her over."
Silence.
Villagers looked toward Lyra.
Fear filled every face.
Then someone stepped forward.
The village blacksmith.
"You'll get nothing from us."
The masked knight sighed.
"I was hoping you'd say that."
He lowered his hand.
The army charged.
Chaos erupted.
People fled in every direction.
Houses burst into flames.
The sound of steel echoed through the streets.
Rowan drew the broken sword Lyra had found beside him days earlier.
The rusted blade suddenly shone with brilliant blue light.
Its broken edge restored itself before Lyra's eyes.
She stared.
"Your sword..."
"It isn't broken anymore."
"It never was."
Rowan smiled sadly.
"I only hid its true form."
Three undead soldiers rushed toward them.
Rowan met them head-on.
His movements were impossibly fast.
One slash.
Two.
Three.
The enemies collapsed into clouds of black ash.
Lyra had never seen anyone fight like that.
"Who are you?" she whispered.
Rowan didn't answer.
More soldiers surrounded them.
The masked knight stepped forward.
"So..."
"The Guardian truly survived."
Rowan's expression darkened.
"I was hoping you'd died six hundred years ago."
The knight laughed.
"So were many others."
Lyra looked between them.
"You know each other?"
Rowan kept his eyes on the knight.
"His name is Darius."
"He was once Captain of the Royal Guard of Asteria."
"The king's most loyal knight."
Lyra froze.
"Asteria..."
The name from her dreams.
Darius slowly removed his helmet.
His face was young.
Too young.
Not a single wrinkle marked his skin.
Only glowing crimson cracks spread across his neck like burning veins.
"I pledged my life to King Kaelith."
He smiled faintly.
"And unlike everyone else..."
"I kept my promise."
Without warning, he vanished.
Lyra gasped.
A heartbeat later—
Clang!
Rowan barely blocked Darius's strike.
The impact shattered the ground beneath them.
The two warriors exchanged blows so quickly that Lyra could hardly follow their movements.
Blue light collided with crimson fire.
Each strike sent shockwaves through the burning village.
Rowan shouted without looking back.
"Lyra!"
"Run!"
She hesitated.
"I can't leave you!"
"You have to!"
Darius smiled.
"Yes."
"Run."
"Because no matter where you hide..."
"Our king will find you."
At that exact moment...
The silver pendant around Lyra's neck began to glow.
A soft golden light spread across her body.
The earth trembled.
The wind stopped.
Every soldier froze.
Even Darius stepped back in surprise.
Far beyond the mountains, seated upon his black horse, Kaelith suddenly looked toward the sky.
His crimson eyes widened.
The magic...
The light...
It was impossible.
A single name escaped his lips.
"Elara..."
Back in Windmere, Lyra collapsed as the golden light burst outward, illuminating the battlefield.
For the first time in six centuries...
Hope—and fear—returned to the heart of the Fallen King.
