Chapter Five: The Order of Dawn

The silver arrow had shattered against Soulrender, but its light still lingered in the air like scattered stars.

Kaelith lowered his sword slowly.

His crimson eyes locked onto the hooded warrior standing at the edge of the forest.

"The Order of Dawn..." he murmured. "I believed I buried your order six centuries ago."

The stranger smiled beneath the hood.

"You buried many of us."

"But not all."

With a single motion, the hooded warrior removed the cloak.

She was a young woman with short silver-blonde hair and piercing blue eyes. A white cloak flowed behind her, embroidered with the symbol of a rising sun. A crystal bow rested in her hand, glowing with holy light.

"My name is Seraphine."

"Captain of the Order of Dawn."

"I've waited a long time to meet you... Ashen Monarch."

Kaelith's expression remained calm.

"You've grown bold."

"No."

Seraphine nocked another arrow.

"We've simply run out of reasons to fear you."

She released the arrow.

It streaked across the battlefield like a falling star.

Kaelith raised one hand.

Dark crimson energy surrounded his palm.

The arrow stopped inches from his face before crumbling into silver dust.

"Impressive," he said.

"But not enough."

In an instant, he disappeared.

A crimson blur crossed the battlefield.

Seraphine barely raised her bow before Soulrender crashed against it.

BOOM!

The ground split apart.

Trees toppled.

The shockwave threw Rowan and Lyra backward.

Seraphine slid across the earth, leaving a deep trail behind her.

She gritted her teeth.

"So this is the strength that destroyed kingdoms..."

Kaelith pointed Soulrender toward her.

"Leave."

"I came only for the girl."

"I have no interest in killing you today."

Seraphine laughed.

"You've changed."

"I've read the stories."

"They said the Fallen King slaughtered anyone who stood before him."

Kaelith looked toward Lyra.

"I've grown tired of unnecessary death."

Those words stunned everyone.

Even Darius looked surprised.

For centuries, Kaelith had been known as a merciless conqueror.

Yet now...

He hesitated.

Because of one girl.

Lyra couldn't understand the strange ache in her chest.

She should hate him.

He had burned villages.

Raised armies of the dead.

Destroyed countless lives.

Yet...

Every time she looked into his crimson eyes...

She saw loneliness.

Not hatred.

Not madness.

Only endless sorrow.

A voice echoed faintly inside her mind.

"Find him..."

"Before it's too late..."

She grabbed her head.

"No..."

The whispers grew louder.

Images flashed before her eyes.

Queen Elara standing beneath blooming cherry trees.

Kaelith smiling.

A child laughing between them...

Then darkness swallowed everything.

"Lyra!"

Rowan caught her before she fell.

"What's wrong?"

"I keep seeing them..."

"The king..."

"The queen..."

"They feel..."

"So real."

Rowan's face darkened.

"It has begun."

Seraphine overheard him.

"You know something."

"I know enough."

"Then tell us!"

Rowan remained silent.

Instead, he looked toward Kaelith.

"The truth cannot be spoken here."

Kaelith nodded slightly.

"For once..."

"We agree."

Darius suddenly stepped forward.

"My king."

"Our scouts report that the High Kingdom has sent its armies."

"They'll reach Windmere before sunset."

Kaelith sighed.

"So they're already moving."

He looked once more at Lyra.

"I won't force you to come with me."

Everyone stared at him.

Even his own soldiers seemed confused.

"But others are coming."

"They won't ask."

"They'll kill everyone around you to reach you."

Lyra swallowed nervously.

"Why...?"

"Why are they after me?"

Kaelith answered quietly.

"Because the moment your pendant awakened..."

"The world learned that hope still exists."

"And kings fear hope more than darkness."

Before anyone could speak—

The sky cracked.

A deafening roar echoed from the heavens.

Dark clouds twisted into a massive whirlpool.

Lightning flashed crimson instead of white.

Then...

A gigantic creature emerged.

Its wings stretched across the sky.

Its scales were black as obsidian.

Its eyes burned like molten gold.

A dragon.

Villagers screamed.

The beast descended, breathing black fire that consumed everything it touched.

Seraphine stared upward in horror.

"Impossible..."

"Dragons have been extinct for five hundred years!"

Kaelith's expression hardened.

"No."

"They've awakened."

The dragon landed with enough force to shake the valley.

Upon its back stood a man wearing brilliant golden armor.

A crown rested upon his head.

His smile was cold.

"So..."

"The rumors were true."

His gaze settled on Lyra.

"You really are alive."

Kaelith's eyes narrowed.

"King Aldric."

The man laughed.

"It's been a long time, old friend."

"We were never friends."

"No."

"We were rivals."

Aldric slowly drew a sword made of pure crystal.

"For six hundred years I've searched for the Child of Dawn."

"And now you've found her for me."

He pointed the crystal blade at Lyra.

"Kill the girl."

Every soldier behind him charged.

Not undead.

Living.

Thousands of knights poured into Windmere as the dragon roared overhead.

Rowan tightened his grip on his sword.

Seraphine raised her glowing bow.

Darius summoned the ghostly army.

For the first time in history...

Heroes and villains stood on the same side.

Kaelith stepped in front of Lyra.

Soulrender burst into crimson flames.

His voice echoed across the battlefield.

"No one..."

"...touches her."

The greatest battle in six hundred years had begun.
