Chapter Four: The King of Ashes

The golden light swallowed the battlefield.

For one breathtaking moment, time itself seemed to stop.

The flames consuming Windmere no longer danced. Ash hung motionless in the air. Even the cries of frightened villagers faded into an unnatural silence.

At the center of it all lay Lyra.

Her silver pendant floated above her chest, glowing brighter than the morning sun. Strange golden symbols circled around her, forming a language no one alive could read.

Rowan shielded his eyes.

"This... can't be."

Darius, the King's immortal commander, took an uneasy step backward.

"The Light of Asteria..."

His voice trembled.

"I thought it vanished with the queen."

Hundreds of undead soldiers instinctively knelt.

Not by command.

By fear.

Far beyond the forest, Kaelith Draven felt the surge of ancient magic ripple through the world.

His horse stopped.

The wind around him disappeared.

For six hundred years, the curse inside his heart had remained silent.

Now it was screaming.

Without another word, Kaelith vanished into crimson mist.

The light surrounding Lyra slowly faded.

She opened her eyes.

But she was no longer standing in the burning village.

She stood inside a palace.

Golden chandeliers sparkled overhead. White marble pillars stretched toward a painted ceiling where dragons and phoenixes circled beneath a sapphire sky.

Soft music echoed through the grand hall.

People laughed.

Servants hurried past carrying flowers.

No one noticed Lyra.

It was as if she were a ghost.

"What is this place...?"

A familiar laugh answered her.

She turned.

A young woman wearing a flowing white gown ran through the hall, smiling brighter than the sun itself.

Long golden hair.

Gentle emerald eyes.

The woman looked... almost identical to the face Lyra had glimpsed in her dreams.

Queen Elara.

She laughed as someone caught her hand.

King Kaelith.

Only...

He looked completely different.

His armor was silver instead of black.

His crimson eyes were warm.

There were no cracks across his body.

No curse.

No broken crown.

Only happiness.

"You cheated," Elara laughed.

"I did not."

"You absolutely did."

Kaelith smiled.

"I merely reached the finish line before you."

"You started before me!"

"I call that strategy."

Elara gently hit his shoulder, unable to stop laughing.

Lyra stared in disbelief.

The man feared across the world...

Had once smiled like this?

He looked... human.

Kind.

Alive.

The scene shifted.

The palace gardens appeared around them.

Cherry blossoms drifted through the spring air.

Kaelith carefully placed a silver pendant around Elara's neck.

It was identical to Lyra's.

"If anything ever separates us," Kaelith whispered, "this pendant will always lead me back to you."

"I know."

"I'll find you."

"You always do."

They embraced beneath the falling blossoms.

Tears formed in Lyra's eyes.

Then...

Everything shattered.

The flowers blackened.

The sky darkened.

The gardens burst into flames.

Elara collapsed, coughing violently.

Kaelith screamed her name.

The vision dissolved into darkness.

Lyra awoke with a gasp.

She was back in Windmere.

The village still burned.

Rowan knelt beside her.

"Lyra!"

"You were unconscious."

She grabbed his arm.

"The pendant..."

"It belonged to Queen Elara."

Rowan froze.

"...You saw the memories."

Before he could say another word—

The air turned cold.

Every flame around the battlefield bent toward a single point.

A heavy silence fell over everyone.

Then came the sound.

One...

Slow...

Footstep.

Another.

Crimson mist rolled across the broken streets.

From within it emerged a lone figure.

Long silver hair.

Black armor glowing through crimson cracks.

A broken crown rested upon his head.

Soulrender hung at his side.

King Kaelith Draven had arrived.

No one moved.

Not even Darius.

The Fallen King looked around the ruined village without emotion.

His crimson eyes finally settled on Lyra.

For the first time in centuries...

His expression changed.

Shock.

His breathing became uneven.

"It..."

His voice was barely above a whisper.

"...can't be."

Lyra felt her heart pounding.

Those same crimson eyes...

The same face...

The man from every dream.

Kaelith slowly walked toward her.

Each step echoed through the silent village.

Rowan immediately stood between them, sword raised.

"You'll go no farther."

Kaelith didn't even look at him.

"Move."

"No."

"I won't let you touch her."

For several seconds, neither man spoke.

Then Kaelith sighed.

"I have no desire to fight you today, Rowan."

"You lost the right to choose six hundred years ago."

Their swords met.

The clash shook the entire valley.

Mountains echoed with thunder.

Rowan was thrown backward several meters, barely managing to stay on his feet.

He stared at Kaelith in disbelief.

"You're stronger..."

Kaelith's voice remained calm.

"I've had six centuries to become stronger."

He stepped around Rowan.

Closer.

Closer still.

Until he stood only a few feet away from Lyra.

She wanted to run.

She couldn't.

Not because she was afraid...

But because something inside her refused to leave.

Kaelith reached out slowly.

His gloved hand stopped just before touching her face.

His fingers trembled.

Six hundred years.

Six hundred years of war.

Six hundred years of loneliness.

And now...

The face before him looked painfully familiar.

Not identical.

But enough to shatter the walls around his heart.

His voice broke.

"...Elara?"

Lyra stared into his eyes.

"I..."

"I don't know who that is."

Pain crossed Kaelith's face like a blade.

For the first time since the fall of Asteria...

The Ashen Monarch looked as though he might cry.

But before another word could be spoken, a blinding arrow of silver light shot from the forest.

Kaelith sensed it at the last instant.

He turned, raising Soulrender.

CLANG!

The impact rang across the valley.

The silver arrow shattered into countless sparks.

From the treeline stepped a hooded warrior carrying a bow made of white crystal.

"You've had your reunion, Your Majesty."

The stranger lowered the bow.

"But this girl isn't yours."

Kaelith's crimson eyes narrowed.

"So..."

"The Order of Dawn still exists."

The hooded warrior smiled.

"As long as darkness walks this world..."

"We always will."

A new battle was about to begin.
