The mist was still falling from the sky like broken glass.
Zhang Wei’s brother’s soldiers lay scattered across the snow. Some were frozen mid-step. Some were running and didn’t look back. None were getting up.
Zhanyi lowered her lightning sword. The blue light bled out of the blade. Her breathing was steady. Behind her, Haku was already moving through the dead, checking for orders, for seals, for anything that would tell them who sent them.
Mian stood at Zhanyi’s shoulder, blood on her knuckles but not a scratch on her.
_“Clear,”_ Mian said.
_“Three riders got away,”_ Haku added. _“East. They’ll reach the capital before us.”_
Zhanyi nodded once. That was fine. Let them talk.
In the middle of the field, Zhang Wei hadn’t moved. Frost spread from his boots and killed the grass under the snow. He turned to Zhanyi. The crooked ice crown was gone. Melted in the fight. His grey eyes looked at her like she was a puzzle he’d waited ten years to solve.
_“You fight like someone who’s already buried,”_ he said.
_“I fight like someone with no one left to bury me,”_ Zhanyi answered.
A ghost of a smile.
He held out his hand. In his palm, ice formed and spun. It split into two rings. One settled on his finger. The other floated to Zhanyi and hovered in front of her face.
_“Paper won’t hold a dead king to a living throne,”_ Zhang Wei said. _“Blood will. Ghost law.”_
Haku stepped forward fast. _“Your Highness, wait. Ghost marriages require a blood oath. If you break it before the terms are met, it—”_
_“I know,”_ Zhanyi cut him off. _“What are the terms?”_
Haku swallowed. _“Until revenge is taken. Until the throne is unquestioned. Until the one who broke the marriage dies.”_
Mian looked at Zhanyi. No words. Just: _your call, General._
Zhanyi took the ring of ice. It didn’t burn. It felt like armor. She slid it on. Then she drew her dagger and cut her palm. Red blood welled, bright against the snow.
Zhang Wei did the same. Black blood. It smoked in the cold.
They pressed their hands together.
The world went quiet. No wind. No birds. Even the mist stopped.
A contract of black parchment appeared between them, floating. Gold words burned across it.
*MARRIAGE OF THE CROWN PRINCESS LI ZHANYI AND THE GHOST KING ZHANG WEI*
*BOUND UNTIL REVENGE IS TAKEN. BOUND UNTIL THE THRONE IS UNQUESTIONED.*
The parchment folded itself once and sank into Zhanyi’s chest. Cold spread through her veins, then settled warm behind her ribs.
Zhang Wei looked at her. Really looked.
_“You didn’t hesitate.”_
_“I don’t have ten days to hesitate,”_ Zhanyi said. _“Elder Mo gave me 10 days to _find_ a king. I found one. Now I need you to help me keep a kingdom.”_
_“And revenge?”_
_“For my father. For your brother. For every person who thinks a woman can’t rule,”_ she said. _“Until then, this marriage stands.”_
Zhang Wei inclined his head. The first bow he’d given anyone in ten years.
_“Then I am yours, wife. Until the end.”_
_“Until the end,”_ Zhanyi echoed.
Behind them, Mian exhaled. Haku was already writing it all down, hand shaking a little.
Mian nudged him with her elbow. _“You okay, scholar?”_
_“I just watched my princess marry a ghost to save a kingdom,”_ Haku said. _“I’m documenting treason. And yes.”_
_“Good,”_ Mian said. Then, quieter, only for him: _“Because I’m not doing this without you.”_
Haku didn’t answer. But his hand brushed hers when he passed her a cloth to clean her knuckles.
An hour later, a hawk dropped from the sky. Mian caught it. The note was short. Urgent.
_GATES CLOSED. LORD CHEN FLEW HIS BANNER OVER THE PALACE. ANNOUNCED BETROTHAL TO LI NAN. COMING HOME WITH A GHOST? BETTER BE A KING._
Zhanyi burned the note in her palm. Lightning sparked and turned it to ash.
_“Chen moved fast,”_ Haku said. _“We have 5 days left to prove Zhang Wei can hold the border, or the Council dissolves the marriage and puts Nan on the throne.”_
_“Then we don’t give them 5 days,”_ Zhanyi said. _“We give them a king tomorrow.”_
That night they didn’t sleep.
Zhanyi sat on a rock, sharpening her sword. Zhang Wei stood on another, watching the tree line. Between them, the marriage contract hummed under her skin like a second heartbeat.
_“Do you regret it?”_ Zhang Wei asked.
Zhanyi looked up at him. Dead grey eyes, living war.
_“No,”_ she said. _“Do you?”_
_“No,”_ he said. _“I’ve been dead ten years. This is the first thing that’s felt alive.”_
Dawn broke over the mountains. Cold and gold.
Day 5 of 10.
A king was found. A marriage was sealed.
Now they had to go home and make the kingdom kneel.
Mian mounted up beside Haku. _“Try not to die, scholar.”_
_“Try not to punch a ghost, General,”_ Haku said.
Mian grinned. _“No promises.”_
They rode.
