The Council Hall had never been this full.
Every elder, every general, every noble who could crawl was there. They wanted to see the Crown Princess fail.
And in the center of it all stood Li Zhanyi.
Black armor. No crown. Lightning sword at her back.
To her right: _Zhang Wei_. No horse, no throne. Just winter following him. Ice ring on his finger.
To her left: _Li Haku_ with scrolls. _Lu Mian_ with her hand on her sword.
Behind them: _Li Nan_ and _Li Mei_, finally free of chains.
Elder Mo slammed his staff.
_“The ten days are up. You were to _find_ a king, Crown Princess. Not drag a corpse into our hall.”_
Murmurs. Lord Chen, with bruises on his neck, sneered from his seat.
Zhanyi didn’t flinch.
_“I found a king. Test him.”_
_“Test a ghost?”_ one elder laughed. _“What, will he freeze our tea?”_
Zhang Wei didn’t speak. He just looked at the doors.
Boom.
The doors blew open. 20 of Chen’s men rushed in, swords drawn. Chen had planned this. Kill the ghost, arrest the princess, put Nan on the throne.
_“Treason!”_ Elder Mo shouted.
_“No,”_ Zhanyi said. _“This is the test.”_
She didn’t draw her sword.
Zhang Wei did.
He moved once. The torches went out. The temperature dropped 20 degrees. Frost shot across the floor and up the walls.
The 20 men froze mid-step. Not dead. Trapped in ice up to their waists. Their swords shattered when they tried to move.
Silence.
Zhang Wei walked through them like they were statues. He stopped in front of Chen.
Frost climbed Chen’s boots.
_“You brought men into the Council Hall,”_ Zhang Wei said. His voice was quiet. _“To kill the Crown Princess. Under ghost law, that makes you forfeit.”_
He touched Chen’s shoulder. Chen screamed and dropped to his knees. When he stood up, his hair was white.
_“Capability proven,”_ Haku said, reading from law. Voice shaking but steady. _“Article 7. A king must defend the throne. The Ghost King defended it.”_
Elder Mo was sweating. _“He... he used sorcery!”_
_“My father used generals,”_ Zhanyi said. _“The Eastern Domain used poison. We use what we have to survive. The law does not forbid it.”_
*Li Nan* stepped forward. No fear now.
_“The people outside are cheering,”_ she said. _“They saw the gates break. They saw a king walk in. They don’t care if he’s breathing. They care if he keeps us alive.”_
*Li Mei* added, _“And he healed two of the guards on the way here. With frost. He didn’t have to.”_
Mian slammed her sword into the ground. _“So what’s it going to be, Elders? Accept the king, or fight him and lose?”_
Elder Mo looked at Zhang Wei. At the ice. At Zhanyi’s face.
He had no choice.
_“The Council... recognizes King Zhang Wei of the Eastern Domain as Consort to the Crown,”_ he choked out. _“Provisionally. For 5 days. You must hold the border.”_
_“We will,”_ Zhanyi said.
The moment the words left, the marriage mark in her chest burned. The contract had heard it.
Zhang Wei turned to her. Only for her.
_“Provisionally,”_ he murmured.
_“For now,”_ Zhanyi answered. _“Until we make it permanent.”_
Lord Chen was dragged out, still shaking.
After, in the empty hall, Haku collapsed onto a bench and put his head in his hands.
_“I think I aged 10 years today.”_
Mian kicked his boot. _“You did good, scholar.”_
_“I did not do good,”_ Haku said. _“I almost threw up.”_
Mian sat beside him. Shoulder to shoulder. _“Next time, you can throw up on me.”_
Haku looked at her. _“Deal.”_
Zhanyi stood at the window. Outside, people were lighting lanterns. For her. For him.
Zhang Wei came up behind her. Didn’t touch her. Ghosts didn’t, in public.
_“Day 5 of 10,”_ he said. _“We have 5 days to hold the border, or they dissolve this.”_
_“Then we don’t give them 5 days,”_ Zhanyi said. _“We end the war in 3.”_
_“Confident, wife?”_
_“I have a ghost king,”_ she said. _“I’m allowed to be.”_
Behind them, the marriage contract pulsed once. Warm.
The countdown wasn’t over.
But the trial was.
_Day 5 of 10: King recognized. 5 days to hold the border._
