The gates of Li Capital were closed.
Black banners with the Chen family crest hung from the walls. Gold dragons, fake smiles. Lord Chen’s men stood on the ramparts with spears and smug faces.
Below the gates, Crown Princess Li Zhanyi stopped her horse.
To her left: _Li Haku_, maps gone, blades out.
To her right: _Lu Mian_, scar lit by torchlight, grinning like this was fun.
Behind her: _Zhang Wei_.
He didn’t ride a horse. He walked through the snow beside them. Black armor, no crown now. Just the ring of ice on his finger and winter coming off him in waves. Dead grey eyes looked at the city like it owed him a debt.
The guards shouted down.
_“The gates are closed by order of Elder Mo! No one enters without the Council’s seal!”_
Mian cupped her hands and yelled back. _“Then tell Elder Mo the Crown Princess brought you a king! Open the damn gates or we’ll open them ourselves!”_
Laughter from the wall. Then silence.
A voice. Lord Chen. Fat, rich, wearing silk in winter.
_“Princess Zhanyi! We heard you ran to the mountains to hide. Come back to marry my son, and we can forget this foolishness. The Council has already approved the betrothal to *Li Nan*. It’s for the good of the kingdom.”_
Zhanyi didn’t answer.
She looked at Zhang Wei.
He lifted one hand.
The mist rolled off him and slammed into the gates. Wood screamed. Iron bent. The 20-foot doors cracked down the middle and blew inward with a sound like thunder.
Screams. Then quiet.
The four of them rode in.
The courtyard was full. Elders. Generals. Nobles. And in the center, on a platform meant for executions, stood *Li Nan*.
In silk. In chains. Not prisoner chains. Ceremony chains. The kind they put on a bride who wasn’t asked.
*Li Mei* was beside her, crying, trying to break the locks with her bare hands.
Nan looked up when Zhanyi entered. Relief broke across her face. Then fear.
_“Zhanyi, don’t—”_
_“Shut up, Nan,”_ Zhanyi said. Not unkind. _“I’m fixing it.”_
Elder Mo stepped forward. He saw Zhang Wei and went pale.
_“What... what is this?”_
_“This,”_ Zhanyi said, voice carrying across the whole courtyard, _“is King Zhang Wei of the Eastern Domain. Ghost King. Ten years dead. My husband.”_
She held up her hand. The ice ring caught the torchlight.
Gasps. One elder fainted. Lord Chen’s face turned purple.
_“Impossible!”_ Chen barked. _“He’s dead! He’s a monster! The law requires a _living_ king!”_
_“The law requires a king,”_ Haku said, stepping forward with a scroll. _“It does not say breathing. It says capable of holding the border. Test him.”_
Mian drew her sword and slammed the butt into the ground. _“Or we can test you, Lord Chen. See how long you last against him.”_
Zhang Wei didn’t speak. He just looked at Chen. Frost spread across the stones toward Chen’s boots. Chen stumbled back.
Elder Mo was sweating. _“A ghost marriage... it is... it is binding. If the terms are met.”_
_“The terms,”_ Zhanyi said, _“are revenge. And an unquestioned throne. We have 5 days left to prove he can hold the border. Until then, this marriage stands. And *Nan* is free.”_
Two of Mian’s soldiers cut Nan’s chains. Mei threw her arms around her sister and sobbed.
Nan ran to Zhanyi and grabbed her hands. _“You married a ghost for me?”_
_“I married a ghost for the kingdom,”_ Zhanyi corrected. _“You’re going to help me rule it.”_
Lord Chen lunged. _“Treason! Guards, take her!”_
He didn’t finish.
Zhang Wei moved. One second he was beside Zhanyi. The next his hand was around Chen’s throat, lifting him off the ground. Ice crawled up Chen’s neck.
_“You speak to my wife again,”_ Zhang Wei said, quiet, _“and you will be colder than me.”_
He dropped Chen. The man hit the ground and didn’t move.
Silence.
Zhanyi turned to the Council. To the army. To the people watching from the walls.
_“In ten days I was told to find a king or lose everything,”_ she said. _“I found one. In five days I will prove he can hold the border. Until revenge is taken, until this throne is unquestioned, I am not ‘just a girl.’ I am the Crown Princess of Li. And this is my king.”_
She took Zhang Wei’s hand. Cold met lightning.
Mian stepped up beside Haku. Shoulder to shoulder, like always.
Haku passed her a dagger without looking. She took it.
Elder Mo sank to his knees. _“The... the marriage is witnessed. The law is satisfied. For now.”_
From the back of the crowd, someone started clapping. Then another. Then the whole courtyard.
Not for Chen. For her.
Day 5 of 10.
King presented.
War declared.
That night in the war room, Zhanyi unrolled a map. Zhang Wei stood at her side. Mian and Haku flanked her.
_“Brother’s army is 3 days north,”_ Haku said.
_“Then we meet them in 3 days,”_ Zhanyi said.
Zhang Wei looked at her. _“Ready to fight beside a ghost, wife?”_
Zhanyi smiled, sharp. _“Ready to win beside a king.”_
Outside, the Chen banners burned.
