Chapter 1 – The Perfect Couple

The first rays of the morning sun spilled through the large windows of the Carter home, filling the kitchen with a soft golden glow. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee mixed with the sweet scent of pancakes drifting through the air, creating the kind of peaceful morning that many people only dreamed about.

Emma Carter stood at the kitchen counter wearing a light-blue sweater and a white apron. She carefully flipped another pancake while humming a tune she had heard on the radio the previous day. Cooking breakfast for her husband had become one of her favourite daily rituals. It wasn't because Daniel expected it, but because it reminded her of the simple joys that had brought them together.

A pair of warm hands gently wrapped around her waist.

"Good morning, beautiful," Daniel whispered, resting his chin on her shoulder.

Emma smiled without turning around.

"I was wondering when the sleeping prince would finally wake up."

Daniel laughed.

"I followed the smell of pancakes. You know that's my weakness."

Emma playfully nudged him with her elbow.

"I thought I was your weakness."

"You are," Daniel replied with a grin. "The pancakes are just a bonus."

They laughed together, the sound filling the quiet house.

To anyone looking in from the outside, Emma and Daniel were the definition of a perfect couple. Married for four years, they had built a comfortable life together in a peaceful neighbourhood. Emma worked as a talented interior designer, while Daniel had recently been promoted to Senior Marketing Executive at a fast-growing advertising company.

Their friends admired them. Their families adored them. Social media showed smiling holiday pictures, anniversary celebrations, and romantic dinner dates that seemed straight out of a fairy tale.

But photographs could never reveal everything.

As they sat down for breakfast, Daniel's mobile phone vibrated on the table.

He glanced at the screen for only a second before quickly turning it face down.

Emma noticed the movement.

"Work already?" she asked casually.

Daniel nodded.

"Yeah. One of the clients keeps sending messages before office hours."

Emma gave a sympathetic smile.

"You've been working so much lately. Maybe you should ask for a day off."

Daniel reached across the table and gently squeezed her hand.

"I promise things will calm down soon."

Emma believed him.

Trust had always been the strongest part of their relationship. She had never questioned where he went or who he spoke to. To her, love meant believing in someone completely.

After breakfast, Emma kissed Daniel goodbye at the front door.

"Don't work too hard."

"I'll try."

"And dinner tonight?"

"I wouldn't miss it."

She smiled as he walked towards his car.

Standing at the doorway, Emma watched him drive away before heading back inside. She had no idea that the promises exchanged that morning would soon begin to lose their meaning.

Daniel parked outside the sleek glass office building where he worked. Employees hurried through the entrance carrying coffee cups and laptop bags while greeting one another with cheerful smiles.

Inside the conference room, everyone gathered for the weekly team meeting.

Their manager, Richard Mason, entered with an excited expression.

"Before we begin," he announced, "I'd like everyone to welcome our newest marketing strategist."

The door opened.

A young woman stepped confidently into the room.

She wore a navy-blue blazer over a cream blouse, her long dark hair neatly tied back. Her confident posture immediately drew attention.

"Good morning," she said with a warm smile. "I'm Sophia Bennett. It's a pleasure to meet all of you."

One by one, the team introduced themselves.

When she reached Daniel, they shook hands.

"Daniel Carter."

"Sophia Bennett."

Their handshake lasted only a second.

Neither of them knew that this ordinary introduction would become the first chapter of a life-changing story.

Richard assigned Sophia to Daniel's team since he was leading the company's biggest advertising campaign.

"I hope you don't mind showing Sophia around," Richard said.

Daniel smiled politely.

"Of course."

Sophia returned the smile.

"I've heard you're one of the best people here."

Daniel chuckled.

"I think someone exaggerated."

"Maybe," she replied, "or maybe they didn't."

The conversation was brief, professional, and harmless.

At least, that's how it seemed.

Across the city, Emma spent her afternoon at the interior design studio where she worked. Her latest project involved renovating an old family home, and she happily sketched ideas while chatting with clients.

Her phone rang.

The screen displayed Lily Parker.

Emma answered immediately.

"Hey, Lily."

"So," Lily said excitedly, "don't forget dinner tonight."

"As if I could."

"I've booked our favourite restaurant. You and Daniel are still coming, right?"

Emma smiled.

"Absolutely."

Lily laughed.

"You two are still the happiest married couple I know."

Emma looked at the framed wedding photograph sitting on her desk.
