The business trip ended without incident.
On Saturday afternoon, Daniel returned home carrying his suitcase and a tired smile. Emma opened the front door before he even had the chance to knock.
"There you are," she said, wrapping her arms around him. "I missed you."
Daniel hugged her tightly.
"I missed you too."
For a brief moment, everything felt normal again.
Emma helped him unpack while he told her about the successful presentation. He mentioned the client, the hotel, and the long meetings but said nothing about the dinner by the riverside with Sophia.
It wasn't exactly a lie.
But it wasn't the whole truth either.
Emma noticed the small crease of guilt on his face, yet she assumed he was simply exhausted from travelling.
"You should rest," she said gently.
"I think I will."
She smiled and kissed his cheek before walking into the kitchen to prepare lunch.
Daniel watched her disappear around the corner.
She deserved honesty.
Instead, he had given her silence.
---
The following week, life settled into a familiar routine.
The advertising campaign was officially complete, and everyone at the office celebrated its success.
Richard congratulated the team.
"You've all done excellent work. Especially Daniel and Sophia. The client has already asked to work with us again."
Applause filled the conference room.
Sophia turned to Daniel with a smile.
"We make a pretty good team."
Daniel smiled back.
"We do."
Mark Collins, who had been quietly watching from the back of the room, noticed the exchange.
Later that afternoon, he caught up with Daniel near the lifts.
"Can I ask you something?"
"Sure."
Mark folded his arms.
"Are you and Sophia getting a little... too close?"
Daniel frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"I've worked with you for six years. Lately, you're always together."
"We've just been working on the same project."
"I'm not accusing you of anything," Mark replied calmly. "I'm just saying... be careful."
Daniel laughed it off.
"You're imagining things."
"I hope so."
Mark walked away, leaving Daniel standing alone.
For the first time, someone else had noticed.
---
That evening, Emma and Daniel decided to stay home.
They ordered takeaway food, watched an old romantic film, and laughed at scenes they had already seen dozens of times.
Emma leaned against Daniel's shoulder.
"I've missed evenings like this."
"So have I."
She looked at him.
"Promise me work won't steal you away forever."
Daniel smiled softly.
"I promise."
Emma believed him.
---
Around midnight, Daniel was fast asleep.
His phone, resting on the bedside table, vibrated softly.
Emma stirred but didn't wake.
A few moments later, it vibrated again.
Still asleep, Daniel didn't move.
Emma slowly opened her eyes.
She reached across the table, intending only to silence the phone so they could both sleep.
The screen lit up before she touched it.
A notification appeared.
Sophia: "Still awake? Today was actually fun. 😊"
Emma paused.
She wasn't shocked.
There was nothing romantic about the message.
Friends and colleagues often texted each other.
She placed the phone back exactly where it had been.
But something about the smiley face lingered in her thoughts.
---
The next morning, Emma tried not to think about it.
She made breakfast as usual.
Daniel kissed her goodbye before leaving for work.
Everything appeared perfectly normal.
Yet the message remained in the back of her mind.
Why would Sophia text him so late?
Perhaps she couldn't sleep.
Perhaps it was about work.
Emma shook the thought away.
Trust meant refusing to assume the worst.
---
At the office, Sophia approached Daniel with a sheepish smile.
"Sorry about last night."
Daniel looked confused.
"My message."
"Oh."
"I forgot how late it was."
Daniel shrugged.
"It's fine."
She laughed.
"You never replied."
"I was asleep."
"Lucky you."
They both smiled before returning to work.
Neither of them noticed Mark watching from across the room.
His expression grew more serious.
---
That evening, Emma decided to do some cleaning while Daniel answered emails in his study.
She dusted the bookshelves, organised the wardrobe, and finally picked up Daniel's jacket from the previous day.
As she reached into the pocket to remove a receipt before washing it, a folded piece of paper slipped onto the floor.
It was the restaurant receipt from the business trip.
Two dinners.
Two desserts.
One bottle of sparkling water.
Emma stared at it.
She remembered Daniel telling her he had spent the evening finishing paperwork alone in his hotel room.
Her heart skipped a beat.
There could be an explanation.
Perhaps he had met the client.
Perhaps another colleague had joined him.
Perhaps...
She folded the receipt carefully and placed it back inside the jacket.
When Daniel walked into the bedroom a few minutes later, Emma smiled as though nothing had happened.
"Everything okay?" he asked.
"Of course."
She hated lying.
But before asking questions, she wanted answers.
---
Late that night, Emma lay awake staring at the ceiling.
Her thoughts refused to settle.
She remembered the late-night message.
She remembered the restaurant receipt.
She remembered how naturally Daniel and Sophia laughed together when she had surprised him at the office.
None of those things proved anything.
Not on their own.
Yet together they formed a picture she didn't want to see.
She turned towards Daniel, who was sleeping peacefully beside her.
The man she had trusted with her whole heart.
The man who had never given her a reason to doubt him.
Or so she had believed.
Outside, rain tapped softly against the bedroom window.
Inside, the silence between them felt louder than ever.
Emma closed her eyes and whispered a quiet prayer.
"I hope I'm wrong."
But deep inside, for the first time since the day they were married...
Doubt had entered her heart.
