Chapter 2: A New Colleague

Monday mornings were always busy at the office, but this one felt different.

Daniel Carter arrived earlier than usual, balancing a cup of black coffee in one hand and his laptop bag in the other. The advertising company buzzed with activity as employees rushed to prepare for the launch of a major campaign for one of their biggest clients.

As Daniel walked toward his desk, he noticed Sophia Bennett already sitting at the workstation beside his. She was focused on her laptop, occasionally scribbling notes into a leather notebook.

She looked up and smiled.

"Good morning."

Daniel smiled politely.

"You're here early."

Sophia shrugged.

"First impressions matter. I didn't want to be the new employee who walks in late."

Daniel laughed.

"Fair enough."

For the next two hours, they worked through presentations, marketing reports, and client profiles. Sophia asked thoughtful questions, listened carefully, and quickly understood the project.

Daniel couldn't deny that she was talented.

"You catch on fast," he admitted.

Sophia leaned back in her chair.

"I've always believed that if you're going to do something, you should do it well."

"I like that attitude."

Before either of them realised it, the conversation had become surprisingly comfortable.

Richard Mason soon called everyone into the conference room.

"Our client has moved the campaign deadline forward," he announced. "Instead of three weeks, we now have only twelve days."

The room filled with quiet groans.

Richard continued.

"Daniel will lead the project, and Sophia will assist him directly. I expect everyone to give this campaign their full attention."

After the meeting, Daniel sighed.

"Twelve days? That's going to mean late nights."

Sophia gave a confident smile.

"Then we'd better get started."

---

Across the city, Emma was visiting a client who wanted to redesign an old Victorian-style home.

She loved her work.

Unlike many designers who simply followed trends, Emma preferred creating spaces that reflected people's personalities. She believed every home should tell a story.

After finishing the consultation, she received a message from Daniel.

Running late tonight. Big project. Sorry.

Emma smiled to herself.

No problem. I'll save your dinner. Good luck. ❤️

She didn't hesitate before replying.

Trust had never been difficult for her.

---

Back at the office, the hours passed quickly.

By seven o'clock in the evening, most employees had already gone home.

Only a handful remained, including Daniel and Sophia.

Sophia stretched her arms and glanced at the clock.

"I think my brain has officially stopped working."

Daniel chuckled.

"Mine gave up about an hour ago."

She stood up.

"Coffee?"

"I was just thinking the same thing."

A few minutes later, they stood together in the small office kitchen.

Sophia handed Daniel a steaming mug.

"So," she asked casually, "how long have you been married?"

Daniel smiled.

"Four years."

"You must really love your wife."

"I do."

Sophia nodded.

"You're lucky."

Daniel noticed something in her expression.

"What about you?"

She looked away for a moment before answering.

"My last relationship ended because my boyfriend cheated on me."

Daniel looked genuinely surprised.

"I'm sorry."

She forced a small smile.

"Life goes on."

An awkward silence followed.

Neither of them realised how ironic that conversation would one day become.

---

It was almost nine o'clock when Daniel finally arrived home.

Emma was curled up on the sofa reading a novel.

The moment she heard the front door open, she looked up with a warm smile.

"Long day?"

"You have no idea."

She walked over and hugged him.

"You look exhausted."

"I am."

Emma took his briefcase.

"I kept dinner warm."

Daniel smiled gratefully.

"I married the right woman."

Emma laughed.

"I know."

They ate together while Daniel talked about deadlines and difficult clients. He mentioned Sophia only once.

"The new strategist is helping with the campaign."

Emma nodded without giving it another thought.

"That's good. At least you won't have to do everything yourself."

Daniel agreed.

"I couldn't manage it alone."

After dinner, Emma fell asleep on the sofa while waiting for him to finish answering emails.

Daniel quietly placed a blanket over her.

For a brief moment, he simply stood there, looking at the woman who had loved him through every success and every failure.

She trusted him without question.

He hoped he would never give her a reason not to.

---

The following morning, another long day awaited them.

As Daniel entered the office, he found a takeaway coffee sitting on his desk.

A sticky note was attached to the cup.

Thought you might need this. — Sophia

Daniel smiled.

It was a small gesture.

Nothing more.

But sometimes, the smallest acts of kindness are the first steps toward something far more complicated.

Outside the office windows, rain began to fall over the city.

Neither Daniel nor Emma realised that a storm had already begun in their own lives—one that would slowly test love, loyalty, and every promise they had ever made.
