Softly, Between the Lines

Softly, Between the Lines

Chapter 1: Coffee, Rain, and Unspoken Sentiments

The relentless rhythm of a late-autumn downpour drummed against the glass windows of Lumière, a cozy, dimly lit café tucked away in a quiet alley of Hongdae. Inside, the air was thick with the rich, inviting aroma of freshly ground Arabica beans, roasted hazelnuts, and damp wool. Warm golden fairy lights hummed softly overhead, casting a gentle glow over the rustic wooden tables and plush leather armchairs.

Sitting in his usual corner booth, Kim Taehyung shifted his gaze from the rain-streaked window back to his sketchbook. His fingers, long and slender, deftly guided a charcoal pencil across the textured paper. Charcoal dust clung to the edge of his hand, but he barely noticed. His entire universe had narrowed down to the figure sitting across from him.

Jeon Jungkook.

Jungkook was currently slumped back against the dark teal cushions, a massive dark green oversized sweater drowning his broad frame. His dark hair, slightly damp from the rain outside, fell in soft, tousled fringe over his eyes. He was completely absorbed in his laptop, his plump bottom lip tucked between his teeth in deep concentration as he edited an audio track for an upcoming project.

Taehyung’s heart did that familiar, treacherous flutter. It was a soft, aching sensation he had grown far too accustomed to over the past three years. Falling in love with your best friend was a cliché Taehyung had always scoffed at in movies—until Jungkook had walked into his life with that bright, bunny-toothed grin and an unshakeable warmth that melted all of Taehyung’s carefully built walls.

"If you keep staring at me like that, Hyung, you're going to burn a hole right through my forehead," Jungkook murmured without looking up from his screen, a faint, sly smirk curving the corner of his lips.

Taehyung didn't flinch. Instead, he rested his chin on his palm, leaning forward slightly as his dark, almond-shaped eyes sparkled with mischievous fondness.

"I'm not staring at you, Kook-ah," Taehyung replied, his deep, velvet voice smooth and teasing. "I'm capturing art. You just happen to be standing in front of my canvas."

Jungkook finally glanced up, tilting his head. "Standing? I'm sitting down."

"Details, details," Taehyung waved his free hand casually. "Besides, you should be honored. Do you know how much a original Kim Taehyung sketch goes for these days? Priceless."

Jungkook let out a soft, melodic laugh that instantly brightened the moody, rain-soaked afternoon. He reached out, his warm fingers casually tapping the back of Taehyung’s hand on the table. "Right, right. My apologies, grand artist. May I at least see what masterpiece you've created of my mug?"

The brief touch of Jungkook’s skin against his sent a subtle jolt through Taehyung’s veins, but he kept his expression perfectly cool, flashing his signature boxy smile. He spun the sketchbook around to reveal the drawing.

It was a detailed portrait of Jungkook in his element—the soft lighting of the café accentuating the sharp line of his jaw, the gentle curve of his nose, and the quiet passion gleaming in his wide, expressive eyes.

Jungkook blinked, staring at the page in genuine surprise. The teasing banter vanished, replaced by a soft beat of silence. "Tae... this is... wow. You made me look way too good."

"Impossible," Taehyung softly murmured before he could filter his thoughts.

Jungkook looked up, his dark eyes locking onto Taehyung's. The warmth in the air suddenly felt a little more intense, the space between them humming with a subtle, electric tension. Jungkook opened his mouth to say something, but before the moment could linger any longer, the chiming bell above the café door rang out loudly.

"Look at you two, cozying up like a married couple while I froze my toes off outside!"

Park Jimin burst into the café, shaking out his drenched umbrella and stomping his boots on the mat. Right behind him was Kim Seokjin, ducking under the doorway and carefully adjusting his beige trench coat with a theatrical sigh.

"I explicitly told you to check the weather app, Jimin," Jin complained dramatically, smoothing down his dark hair. "My coat is custom-tailored! Rain is an enemy to fashion!"

"Hyung, you insisted on walking through the park to look 'dramatic in the mist,'" Jimin retorted with a giggle, brushing wet strands of blonde hair from his eyes as they navigated their way over to Taehyung and Jungkook's booth.

Jungkook pulled his laptop closer to make room, grinning at the pair. "Did you guys bring the files from the studio?"

"Of course we did," Jimin said, sliding into the booth next to Taehyung. He immediately dropped his head onto Taehyung’s shoulder with an exaggerated sigh of relief. "Tae, tell Jin-hyung he owes me hot chocolate for dragging me out."

Taehyung chuckled, reaching up to fondly ruffle Jimin’s damp hair. "Jin-hyung, buy him his drink before he turns into a puddle."

"Unbelievable," Jin huffed, though a affectionate smile gave him away as he headed toward the counter. "I raise you all, and this is the respect I get."

As Jimin immediately began babbling about their latest choreography rehearsal, Taehyung subtly glanced back across the table.

Jungkook was watching him—his dark eyes tracking the gentle way Taehyung was fixing Jimin's hair. A tiny, almost imperceptible crease appeared between Jungkook's brows, his jaw tightening just a fraction before he masked it with a quick sip of his iced Americano.

Taehyung’s chest tightened. Was that... jealousy? Or was he just projecting his own desperate hopes onto his best friend?

Jungkook set his glass down on the wooden coaster with a small clack. His eyes flicked up, meeting Taehyung’s gaze through his dark bangs.

"Taehyung-hyung," Jungkook said, his tone dropping an octave, smooth and surprisingly firm over Jimin's chatter. "After Jin-hyung gets back... walk home with me under my umbrella. Yours is broken anyway."

Taehyung felt his pulse quicken. He locked eyes with the younger boy, catching the quiet, undeniable heat simmering in Jungkook's gaze.

"Okay," Taehyung whispered, the corner of his lips tugging upward. "Lead the way."
