Chapter 3: The Threshold of Honesty

The walk to Taehyung’s apartment passed in a haze of unspoken promises and charged silence. The warmth of Jungkook’s hand had eventually slipped from Taehyung’s cheek, but the memory of his thumb tracing his skin burned hotter than ever.

They stood outside Taehyung’s apartment door on the fourth floor. The dim hallway light flickered softly overhead, casting long shadows against the walls. The faint scent of old wood and fresh lavender hanging from the neighboring doors filled the corridor.

Jungkook pressed the button on his navy umbrella, shaking off the loose droplets of water before leaning it against the wall. He turned back to Taehyung, his hands resting casually in the pockets of his dark green sweater, though his eyes were anything but relaxed. They were steady, dark, and searching.

Taehyung keyed in his door code—0901, a combination he had chosen years ago and never bothered to change—and the lock clicked open with a soft chime.

He swung the door open, stepping into the entryway, but paused when he realized Jungkook hadn't immediately followed him in. Taehyung turned around, tilting his head.

"Are you coming in, Kook-ah? Or are you planning on standing in the hallway all night?"

Jungkook looked at him, his tongue poking against the inside of his cheek—a habit he always fell back on when he was nervous. "I mean... you didn't explicitly invite me in, Tae. And after what I said down on the street..."

Taehyung felt a small, fond smirk tug at his lips. For all of Jungkook’s bold, teasing flirts on the street, the younger boy could still be surprisingly shy when it counted.

"Since when do you need an official invitation to my apartment?" Taehyung asked softly, stepping closer to the doorway. He reached out, his fingers catching the hem of Jungkook’s sleeve, pulling him gently across the threshold. "Come inside. It's cold."

Jungkook let himself be drawn in, slipping his shoes off at the entrance. The apartment was warm and intimately lit, filled with Taehyung’s personal touches—eccentric art prints on the walls, vintage vinyl records stacked near a record player, and soft, oversized throw pillows scattered across the floor.

As the heavy door clicked shut behind them, sealing out the damp night air, the atmosphere inside instantly shifted. It was too quiet. Too intimate.

Taehyung walked over to his small kitchen island, eager to give his restless hands something to do. "I'll make us some hot tea. Chamomile? You've been working late at the studio all week, you need to rest."

"Tae."

The low, grounded sound of his name caught Taehyung mid-motion. He paused, his hands resting on the granite countertop, and turned around slowly.

Jungkook hadn't moved from the living room floor rug. He had shed his backpack, his dark hair messy and sticking up slightly in the back. He looked raw, gorgeous, and utterly transparent.

"You're deflecting," Jungkook said softly, taking a slow step toward the kitchen island. "You always do that when you get overwhelmed. You start host-mode."

Taehyung let out a soft, breathy laugh, though there was no real humor in it. "I'm just being a good host, Kook—"

"I don't want tea, Tae," Jungkook interrupted gently, stopping just on the other side of the island. He rested his forearms on the surface, leaning forward slightly so his gaze was level with Taehyung’s. "I want you to tell me why you looked at me like that in the café when Jimin was sitting next to you."

Taehyung froze. His breath hitched in his throat. "I... I don't know what you mean."

"You do," Jungkook countered, his voice dropping into that deep, magnetic register that sent shivers straight down Taehyung’s spine. "You looked jealous, Hyung. And then you looked... sad. Like you thought I belonged to someone else, or that I couldn't see you."

Taehyung bit his lower lip, turning his head away toward the sink, unable to hold that intense, piercing stare any longer. "Don't be ridiculous, Jungkook-ah. We're best friends. I was just... thinking."

A soft rustle of fabric was his only warning before Jungkook walked around the island, closing the distance between them entirely.

Before Taehyung could step back, broad hands gently gripped his waist, turning him around until Taehyung’s back was pressed against the edge of the kitchen counter. Jungkook didn't trap him roughly; he simply stood close, his body radiating a intoxicating, steady heat that enveloped Taehyung completely.

"Look at me, Tae," Jungkook requested softly, his tone pleading yet unyielding.

Reluctantly, Taehyung lifted his eyes.

Jungkook’s face was inches away. Taehyung could see the tiny brown specks in his dark irises, the soft curve of his lips, the faint flush rising up his neck.

"Three years," Jungkook whispered, his thumbs lightly stroking the fabric of Taehyung's jacket at his hips. "I've waited three years for you to look at me the way you did today. Don't tell me I imagined it. Please."

Taehyung’s heart hammered furiously against his ribs, so loud he was certain Jungkook could hear it. The walls he had built for years to protect their friendship began to crumble, piece by piece, under the weight of Jungkook’s honest eyes.

"You didn't imagine it," Taehyung breathed out, his voice trembling slightly. His hands found their way up on their own, resting against the broad expanse of Jungkook’s chest, feeling the steady, heavy beat of the younger boy’s heart. "I'm terrified, Kook-ah. I love you so much it frightens me."

A breathtaking, radiant smile slowly broke across Jungkook’s face—a grin so genuine and dazzling it practically illuminated the dim apartment.

"Good," Jungkook murmured, leaning down until their foreheads rested against each other, their shared breath warm and sweet in the tiny space between them. "Because I'm completely out of my mind for you, Kim Taehyung."
