The taxi disappeared into the rainy streets.

Maya wrapped her arms around Noah and Daisy as they sat quietly beside her.

Neither child noticed the tears gathering in their mother's eyes.

"Mummy," Daisy asked softly, "why were you crying back there?"

"I had my reasons."

"Were those children already born when you left?"

Her heart pounded.

She forced herself to remain calm.

"They're my children."

"I know that."

Alexander turned to face her.

"I'll be there in an hour."

He ended the call and looked back at Maya.

"You may go."

She didn't wait another second.

As soon as she stepped out of the office, she leaned against the wall and took a shaky breath.

"If he finds those records..." she whispered.

"...everything will change."

Unbeknownst to both of them, someone had overheard their conversation.

Sophia Hart, Alexander's ambitious ex-girlfriend, stood around the corner with a cold smile.

"So," she murmured to herself, "Maya is back."

She clenched her handbag tightly.

"If those children are really Alexander's..."

Her eyes narrowed with determination.
