The Promise We Couldn't Keep

Chapter One: The Day Everything Began

The rain had finally stopped.

The morning sky was painted with soft shades of orange as the sun slowly climbed over the quiet town of Ashwood. The streets were still damp, reflecting the golden light that peeked through the clouds. Shopkeepers swept the front of their stores while children hurried to school, laughing as they jumped over puddles.

For most people, it was just another ordinary Monday.

For Ethan Carter, it would become the day that changed his life forever.

Ethan adjusted the strap of his worn backpack and looked at the old wristwatch his father had given him before he died. It barely worked anymore, stopping every few hours, but Ethan refused to replace it. It was the only thing he had left from the man he admired most.

His mother had raised him alone ever since. She worked long hours at a small diner, often returning home exhausted with sore feet and tired eyes. Even so, she never complained.

"One day," she always told him, "our hard days will become beautiful memories."

Ethan wanted to believe her.

He wasn't rich.

He wasn't popular.

He wasn't the smartest student in school.

But he had something many people didn't.

Hope.

As he walked through the school gates, he noticed students whispering excitedly.

"Did you hear?"

"She's transferring here today."

"They said her family owns half the businesses in the city."

"They're unbelievably rich."

Ethan ignored the gossip.

Rich or poor, everyone eventually became just another student.

Or so he thought.

The school bell echoed through the campus.

Students rushed into their classrooms while teachers prepared for the morning announcements.

Mr. Daniels, the literature teacher, cleared his throat.

"Before we begin today's lesson, I'd like everyone to welcome our new student."

The classroom door opened.

A girl stepped inside.

Silence filled the room.

She wasn't dressed extravagantly.

Her uniform looked exactly like everyone else's.

But something about her made time slow down.

Long dark hair rested gently over her shoulders.

Her brown eyes carried both confidence and sadness, as though she had already lived through more pain than anyone her age should know.

She smiled politely.

"My name is Amelia Brooks."

The boys immediately stared.

Several girls whispered to one another.

Mr. Daniels pointed toward the empty seat beside Ethan.

"You'll sit there."

Ethan nearly laughed.

Of all the seats...

She walked over quietly.

"Hi," she said.

"I'm Amelia."

"Ethan."

She smiled.

"It's nice to meet you."

For reasons he couldn't explain...

His heart beat faster.

...

Days turned into weeks.

Weeks slowly became months.

Against everyone's expectations, Amelia never surrounded herself with the popular students.

Instead...

She always found herself sitting beside Ethan.

They studied together after school.

Shared lunches.

Walked home together.

Laughed about silly things.

She loved books.

He loved writing stories.

She encouraged him to keep writing.

"You have talent," she once told him.

"You just don't believe it yet."

No one had ever said that to him before.

Not even himself.

Little by little...

She became his favorite part of every day.

One evening they sat beneath the giant oak tree overlooking the river.

The wind carried fallen leaves around them.

"It's peaceful here," Amelia whispered.

"My father used to bring me here," Ethan replied.

"I come whenever life gets too loud."

She looked at him.

"What do you want to become?"

He laughed.

"A famous writer."

"Really?"

"Crazy dream, right?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"It's beautiful."

He smiled.

"What about you?"

She hesitated.

"I just want a life where people love me for who I am."

Ethan frowned.

"They don't?"

She looked away.

"They love my family's money."

The words stayed with him.

For the first time...

He realized loneliness didn't care how much money someone had.

That afternoon they made a promise.

No matter where life took them...

No matter how difficult things became...

They would never leave each other behind.

Amelia pulled a silver necklace from her pocket.

It held two small halves of a heart.

She handed one piece to Ethan.

"When we're older..."

She smiled.

"If we still have these..."

"We'll know we kept our promise."

Ethan accepted it carefully.

"I'll never lose it."

"I promise."

She held out her little finger.

He laughed.

"A pinky promise?"

"The strongest kind."

Their fingers locked together beneath the setting sun.

Neither of them knew...

Life had already begun planning to break that promise.

...

Across town...

Inside a black luxury car...

A middle-aged man watched them through tinted windows.

He wore an expensive suit.

His expression never changed.

"So that's the boy."

"Yes, sir."

"She spends almost every day with him."

The man's jaw tightened.

"I warned her."

"What should we do?"

The man stared through the window as Ethan and Amelia laughed together beneath the oak tree.

Then he spoke quietly.

"End it."

The driver nodded.

"Understood."

The black car drove away.

Neither Ethan nor Amelia noticed.

The wind continued to blow.

The river continued to flow.

And somewhere in the distance...

A storm had already begun.
