The Promise We Couldn't Keep

The Promise We Couldn't Keep

Chapter Two: Shadows Behind the Smile

The next morning, Ethan woke before sunrise.

He had barely slept.

For some reason, Amelia's words from the previous evening kept replaying in his mind.

"I just want a life where people love me for who I am."

He stared at the silver half-heart necklace hanging around his neck. It felt strange how something so small could suddenly mean so much.

After getting ready, he walked to school as usual. The streets buzzed with life, but something felt... different.

As he entered the school gate, he spotted Amelia sitting alone beneath the old mango tree. Normally, she greeted him with a smile that could brighten the dullest morning.

Today, she didn't.

"Ethan," she said softly.

He immediately noticed the dark circles beneath her eyes.

"Did something happen?"

She forced a smile.

"I'm fine."

He knew she wasn't.

"You don't have to pretend with me."

For a moment, she looked as if she wanted to say something. Instead, she shook her head.

"It's nothing."

Before Ethan could ask another question, the school bell rang.

The morning lessons dragged on.

Amelia barely spoke.

She stared out the window throughout Literature class, and during lunch she hardly touched her food.

By the end of the day, Ethan couldn't ignore it any longer.

"Walk with me," he said.

She nodded.

They made their way toward the river, the place where they always escaped the noise of the world.

The cool breeze brushed against their faces.

Finally, Amelia stopped walking.

"My father found out."

Ethan's stomach tightened.

"Found out about us?"

She nodded.

"He doesn't want me spending time with you anymore."

"Why?"

She laughed bitterly.

"Because your family isn't wealthy."

The words landed like a punch.

Ethan looked down at the ground.

"So... that's all I am to him?"

"He says people like us belong in different worlds."

Silence settled between them.

Ethan clenched his fists.

"I may not have money," he said quietly, "but I can work hard. I can build a future."

"I know."

"He doesn't."

Tears welled in Amelia's eyes.

"I argued with him."

"You did?"

"I told him I don't care how much money someone has."

She smiled sadly.

"He slapped me."

Ethan froze.

For a moment, he couldn't breathe.

"He... what?"

She quickly looked away, embarrassed.

"It isn't the first time."

A surge of anger rose inside Ethan unlike anything he had ever felt.

No one deserved that.

Especially not her.

That evening, inside the Brooks mansion, tension filled every room.

Richard Brooks stood beside the fireplace, staring at family portraits hanging on the wall.

One photograph showed Amelia as a little girl laughing in her mother's arms.

His expression softened for only a second.

Then it disappeared.

A knock echoed through the room.

"Come in."

A tall man in a black suit entered.

"Sir."

"Is it done?"

"Not yet."

Richard frowned.

"I told you to separate them."

"We're watching the boy."

"Watching isn't enough."

The man hesitated.

"Sir... he's just a student."

Richard turned slowly.

"You think this is about a school romance?"

"No, sir."

"It never is."

He picked up a framed photograph from his desk.

The picture showed two young men smiling together.

One of them was Richard.

The other...

Looked almost exactly like Ethan.

Richard's hands trembled.

"This family has already destroyed one promise."

"I won't let history repeat itself."

The man in the suit lowered his head.

"I understand."

Meanwhile, Ethan sat at home trying to write in his notebook.

Usually, words flowed easily.

Tonight, every page remained blank.

His mother walked into his room carrying two cups of tea.

"You've been quiet."

He shrugged.

"Just thinking."

She sat beside him.

"When your father was your age, he looked exactly like you whenever something was bothering him."

Ethan smiled faintly.

"I wish I could've known him longer."

She gently squeezed his shoulder.

"He would've been proud of the young man you're becoming."

Her eyes drifted to the necklace around his neck.

"That's new."

He touched it without realizing.

"A friend gave it to me."

She smiled knowingly.

"A very special friend?"

His cheeks turned red.

"Maybe."

For the first time that day, he laughed.

Across town, Amelia stood on the balcony outside her bedroom.

The city lights stretched into the distance like thousands of tiny stars.

She held the other half of the silver heart tightly in her hand.

"No matter what happens," she whispered into the night, "I won't break my promise."

A voice behind her answered.

"You may not have a choice."

She spun around.

Her father stood in the doorway.

"I've arranged for you to leave Ashwood."

Her face went pale.

"What?"

"You'll be transferring schools."

"No!"

"You leave in three days."

"You can't do this!"

"I already have."

Tears streamed down her face.

"You'll never see Ethan Carter again."

The bedroom door closed with a heavy thud.

Amelia collapsed to the floor, clutching the necklace against her chest as sobs echoed through the silent room.

Outside, thunder rolled across the dark sky.

Some promises are tested by time.

Others...

Are tested by people willing to destroy them.

And neither Ethan nor Amelia knew that someone had already started a plan that would change both of their lives forever.
