The Distance Between Us

The days after that conversation felt different.

Not because anything had changed between us, but because everything had.

Sometimes, the hardest part about losing someone is not the moment they leave. It is the silence that comes afterward. The empty spaces where their messages used to be. The moments when you reach for your phone without thinking, only to remember that things are no longer the same.

I tried to convince myself that I was fine.

I went to work. I smiled when people talked to me. I laughed at jokes I barely heard.

But every night, when the world became quiet, my mind returned to her.

To us.

To the promises we made when we believed nothing could ever come between us.

"I'll always choose you."

Those were the words we said.

Back then, they felt impossible to break.

Now, they felt like a memory from another lifetime.

A week passed before I saw her again.

It was at the small café where we used to spend our afternoons. The place hadn't changed. The same old chairs sat near the window. The same music played softly in the background.

But the person sitting across from me was different.

Or maybe I was.

"You look tired," she said.

I forced a small smile.

"So do you."

She looked away.

For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.

There were so many things we wanted to say, but somehow none of the words felt right.

"I've been thinking about everything," she finally said.

I looked at her.

"And?"

She took a deep breath.

"And I don't know if we can fix this."

The honesty hurt.

But somehow, I appreciated it more than a lie.

"Do you want to fix it?" I asked.

She looked at me, and I saw the conflict in her eyes.

"I don't know."

That answer stayed with me.

Because sometimes the person who hurts you isn't trying to hurt you. Sometimes they are just lost, trying to figure out what they want.

But being lost can still leave someone else broken.

"I never wanted to lose you," she whispered.

"Then why did it feel like you were letting me go?"

She had no answer.

And maybe that was the answer.

We sat there for a long time, surrounded by people who had no idea that two hearts were falling apart at the same table.

Before we left, she reached for my hand.

A simple gesture.

The same gesture that used to make me feel like everything was going to be okay.

But this time, it felt different.

"Can we start again?" she asked.

I looked at her.

A part of me wanted to say yes immediately.

The part of me that still loved her.

But another part remembered the pain.

The nights I spent wondering if I mattered.

The moments when I felt alone even when I wasn't.

"I don't know if we can go back," I said.

Her eyes lowered.

"But maybe we don't have to."

She looked up.

"Maybe we can build something new."

For the first time in a long time, I saw hope.

Not the kind that promises everything will be perfect.

The kind that admits things are broken but still believes they can be repaired.

As we walked away from the café that day, we didn't have all the answers.

We didn't know if love would be enough.

We didn't know if the past would always follow us.

But we knew one thing.

We weren't ready to give up yet.

And sometimes...

the first step toward finding someone again is finding the courage to face what drove them away.
