Chapter 3: Unspoken Yield

The heavy oak doors clicked shut as Lucien withdrew, leaving the room once again engulfed in a thick, suffocating silence. Cassian remained frozen against the edge of the desk, his fingers slowly uncurling from the dark wood. His chest heaved as air returned to his lungs, but the lingering residue of Malakor’s aura kept his body on high alert.

Malakor hadn't moved an inch away from his path to the desk. He stood with his hands tucked casually into his pockets, observing Cassian's recovery with sharp, calculating eyes.

"You look flushed, Cassian," Malakor remarked smoothly, his tone laced with dark amusement. "Is the climate in the Citadel too intense for you?"

Cassian pushed himself upright, his pride burning like fire beneath his skin. He adjusted the cuffs of his sleeves, trying to mask the slight tremor in his hands. "Your aura is impressive, Nightshade. But intimidation won't change the terms of the territory agreement. The Vance family holds the trade routes, and you need those routes open."

"I don't need anything from a man who can barely stand in my presence," Malakor replied, taking a slow step forward.

As Malakor closed the tiny gap between them, Cassian instinctively tried to step back, but his lower back bumped directly into the sturdy desk behind him. Trapped between the heavy wood and the imposing form of the elder Enigma, Cassian’s breath hitched again.

Malakor raised a hand, his long fingers gently catching Cassian by the chin. The touch was cool, yet it sent a sharp, electric jolt down Cassian's spine. With absolute, effortless force, Malakor tilted Cassian's face upward, forcing their eyes to lock.

"Let go," Cassian demanded softly, though the edge in his voice lacked its usual bite, betrayed by the rapid pulse fluttering at his neck.

"Why should I?" Malakor murmured, his thumb lightly tracing the line of Cassian’s jawline. "Your body already understands what your mind refuses to accept. You came here seeking a partnership, Cass, but you will leave here bound to my authority."

Cassian swallowed hard, staring into the dark expanse of Malakor's eyes. The realization washed over him with terrifying clarity—the shift had already occurred. The undisputed leader of the Vance lineage was no longer in control, and the night was far from over.
