The room remained heavy with the residual heat of Malakor’s aura, the quiet hum of the Citadel outside fading into a distant murmur. Cassian remained pressed against the desk, his hands slowly slipping down from Malakor’s broad chest as his breathing gradually stilled. His neck still throbbed faintly where Malakor had claimed his territory, a persistent physical reminder of how quickly his defenses had been dismantled.
Malakor did not step back immediately. Instead, he allowed his thumb to linger over the sensitive skin near Cassian's collarbone, watching the slight pulse flutter beneath the surface.
"You are surprisingly quiet now, Cass," Malakor murmured, his dark eyes searching Cassian's face. "Where is the arrogant Enigma who walked through my front doors expecting a quick concession?"
Cassian forced his head up, meeting Malakor’s steady gaze. The pride that had defined him for years refused to extinguish completely, even if his body had already surrendered to the undeniable hierarchy in the room.
"I am a businessman, Nightshade," Cassian replied, his voice still low and gravelly from the sudden strain. "A temporary setback in aura doesn't negate the facts. My family controls the supply lines through the northern pass. You need those routes secured before the royal summit next month."
A subtle smile touched the corner of Malakor's mouth, appreciative of the resilience behind Cassian’s words. He finally retracted his hand, taking half a step back to give Cassian room to breathe, though his presence continued to fill the entire space.
"The northern pass is indeed vital," Malakor agreed, walking smoothly back toward his heavy desk and leaning casually against the polished edge. "And under normal circumstances, we would draft a standard contract with shared governance. But circumstances have changed, haven't they?"
Cassian carefully straightened his posture, rolling his shoulders back to shed the remaining tension in his frame. "How so?"
"You came into this stronghold with the intent to dominate the negotiation," Malakor said, crossing his arms over his chest. "You expected to hold the advantage. But now that you understand who holds the true power in this partnership, the terms must reflect that reality."
"I am not handing over total control of the Vance trade lines," Cassian said firmly, taking a step toward the center of the room to reclaim a sense of balance.
"I don't expect you to," Malakor replied calmly. "You will continue to manage the logistics, as your expertise dictates. However, all final decisions, security protocols, and customs levies will go through my office. The Nightshade lineage will have the final say on every shipment."
Cassian narrowed his eyes, calculating the implications. It was a severe compromise, one that placed his family's operations directly under Malakor's authority. Yet, deep down, he knew Malakor possessed the strength and resources to secure those routes far better than anyone else—especially with the growing instability surrounding Prince Kael and Lucien's position.
"And what do I get in return for this... submission?" Cassian asked, the word tasting strange and heavy on his tongue.
"You get the full backing of the Nightshade crest, military protection for your routes, and..." Malakor’s eyes darkened slightly as he locked his gaze onto Cassian once more, "...my personal attention whenever business brings you back to the Citadel."
The subtle promise in Malakor’s tone sent a fresh wave of heat through Cassian's veins. He closed his eyes briefly, weighing his pride against the inevitable truth of their new reality, before opening them again to give his answer.
