The silence in the dimly lit study grew heavier as Cassian stood pinned against the mahogany desk, his pulse hammering against his throat. The cool touch of Malakor’s hand on his jaw held him completely in place. Every instinct Cassian possessed as an Enigma screamed at him to fight back, to break the hold and reassert his dominance, but his body refused to obey. The oppressive weight of Malakor’s aura kept his muscles locked, rendering his strength useless.
Malakor’s dark eyes swept over Cassian’s face, taking in the sharp angle of his jaw, the slight flush rising on his neck, and the defiant glint lingering in his eyes despite his obvious submission. A slow, dangerous smile pulled at the corner of Malakor’s lips.
"You speak of trade routes and terms, Cass," Malakor murmured, his deep voice vibrating against the tight space between them. "Yet you stand here trembling under my hand."
"I am not trembling," Cassian rasped out, his breathing ragged as he tried to pull his head back.
Instead of releasing him, Malakor shifted his grip, his fingers sliding from Cassian's chin to the back of his neck. With a firm, measured pressure, Malakor tilted Cassian’s head to the side, completely exposing the bare skin of his neck and collarbone to the dim light of the study.
Cassian’s breath hitched violently at the sudden exposure. His throat felt dry, his heart racing as he felt the cool air hit his skin—followed immediately by the intense heat of Malakor leaning down close.
"You still think you can bargain with me as an equal," Malakor whispered softly, his breath brushing directly against the sensitive crook of Cassian’s neck.
Before Cassian could summon another word, Malakor leaned in further and nipped sharply at the skin just above his collarbone.
A sharp gasp tore from Cassian’s throat as the sudden sting sent a wave of intense heat rushing straight down his spine. His hands instinctively slammed against Malakor’s broad shoulders to push him away, but Malakor didn't budge an inch. The hold on the back of Cassian’s neck remained immovable, anchoring him firmly in place while Malakor smoothlyothed over the sensitive mark with a slow, lingering press of his thumb.
The physical reminder of Malakor’s dominance left Cassian thoroughly shaken. The top who had ruled over every room he ever walked into was now breathless, pinned to a desk, with his neck exposed at the mercy of an absolute superior.
Malakor slowly pulled back just enough to look Cassian in the eye once more. His thumb still rested against the reddened mark on Cassian's neck, feeling the rapid, frantic beat of his pulse beneath the surface.
"That is a reminder, Cassian," Malakor said, his voice smooth, low, and entirely commanding. "When you step into this room, you leave your title at the door. The trade routes will be settled on my terms, and so will everything else between us."
Cassian swallowed hard, his hands resting weakly against Malakor’s chest. His chest heaved as he struggled to regain his composure, but as he stared into Malakor’s unyielding eyes, he knew there was no turning back. The dynamic had officially flipped, and the undisputed apex of the Vance family had finally met his match.
