The Codex Of Broken Star

The Codex Of Broken Star

*PROLOGUE: The Night The Sky Bled*

No one saw them fall.

That was the first lie.

That was the first thing we agreed to forget.

The stars didn’t crash.

They didn’t scream.

They unstitched.

It was 3:17 AM.

Every clock in every city stopped at 3:17.

Not because they broke.

Because time hiccuped.

For seven minutes the sky was white.

Not light.

_White._

Like the sun had turned inside out.

Dogs went quiet.

Babies stopped crying.

The ocean went flat.

Then it was over.

And the sky had holes in it.

46 of them.

Black.

Perfect.

Where stars used to be.

In the morning, the world looked the same.

Until people opened their eyes.

A baker in Greymark woke up and knew the exact weight of every loaf in his shop, three streets away.

A soldier in the north breathed out and the air turned to glass.

A girl in the orphanage reached for the door and her hand went through it, into yesterday.

The governments called it *The Fracture*.

The temples called it *The Gift*.

The doctors called it *contagion*.

But the ones it happened to pressed their hands to their temples and whispered the same word:

*"the ache."*

For fifty years we hunted them.

For fifty years we studied them.

For fifty years we pretended the sky was fine.

We were wrong.

---

Deep in the Ash Observatory, the dome had collapsed.

Rain came in.

Birds nested in the telescope.

And on a stone table in the center, under glass that had cracked but never shattered,

lay a book.

No title.

Cover like old leather that had been burned and cooled.

When you tilted it, the cover moved.

Like there were stars under the skin.

It had no author.

It had no last reader.

It had been placed there the night before the stars fell.

By who, no record said.

For fifty years it did nothing.

For fifty years it bled a little light when no one was looking.

That night, the wind came through the broken dome again.

It wasn’t a strong wind.

Just enough.

The glass cracked the rest of the way.

The book opened.

Page one was blank.

For one breath.

Then fire, but cold fire, wrote across it:

*LIRA VANE*

_Cartographer. Scavenger. Unmarked._

_Constellation: None. Threat Level: Unknown._

On the cover, 46 stars flared to life.

Far away, in 7 shattered cities, 46 people woke up gasping.

Because for the first time since the Fracture,

something had seen them.

Named them.

Counted them.

In a basement in the capital, a man with no shadow tore a page from a different book.

On the Codex, a star went dark.

A name disappeared.

The book shuddered.

A drop of light, like ink, ran down the margin.

At the very back, page 47 was blank.

Thick.

Waiting.

It wasn’t waiting for a name.

It was waiting for _the_ name.

The one who pulled the stars down.

Or the one who would put them back up.

Outside the observatory, the sky had 45 stars left.

And somewhere in the ruins, a scavenger with dust on her boots

was about to climb the hill,

because she’d heard there was something in the Ash Observatory

that glowed at night.

The Codex turned the page by itself.

Ready.
