The city stayed dark for three hours.
Lira walked through it.
No lamp.
No map.
Just the book against her ribs and the sound of her own breathing.
New Kess at night was different.
No Guild patrols.
No drones.
No scanners.
Just people.
Moving.
Quiet.
Some of them had light.
Not real light.
Starlight.
Faint.
Under their skin.
In their eyes.
Lira saw them and looked away fast.
Star-touched got taken if the Hollow saw them.
She didn’t stop.
When the power came back, it came all at once.
Streetlights.
Signs.
The Guild tower in the center.
Black glass lit from inside.
Lira was already under the east bridge.
With the river people.
They had a fire.
Small.
Illegal.
No one reported it.
The Guild didn’t come here unless someone bled.
An old woman sat near the fire.
Wrinkled hands.
Eyes that were too clear.
She looked at Lira.
Looked at the bag.
Didn’t say anything.
Lira sat down.
Didn’t take the book out.
The woman passed her bread.
Dry.
Lira ate it anyway.
“How long you been carrying that” the woman asked.
Lira froze.
“I don’t—”
“You don’t have to lie to me, girl,” the woman said.
“I can’t see it. But I can feel the weight.”
She tapped her temple.
“Used to be one of us. Before the Fracture took it.”
Lira didn’t answer.
The woman nodded.
“Keep it close. And don’t let it choose wrong.”
She stood.
Went back to her cot.
Lira stayed until dawn.
When the sun came up, the city was normal again.
Guild flyers on every corner.
`SEALED SITE: OBSERVATORY HILL`
`REPORT ALL CONTACT`
Lira tore one down.
Used it to wrap the book.
Then put it in the bag.
She needed to move.
The book said forty-five.
She didn’t know what that meant.
But the Hollow would know.
First rule of scavenging: don’t go home.
Second rule: don’t go to anyone you know.
She went to the market.
The market was loud.
Always loud.
Stalls.
Shouting.
The smell of oil and metal and fake spice.
No one looked at her.
Good.
She traded the copper from the observatory for food.
And batteries.
And a new knife.
The old one was still in the bag.
She didn’t know why she kept it.
A boy bumped into her.
Fast.
Hands quick.
When he pulled away, her bag was lighter.
Lira grabbed his wrist.
“Give it back.”
He froze.
Looked at her.
Looked at the bag.
“Didn’t take nothing,” he said.
But his eyes went to her coat.
To where the book was.
He could feel it.
Star-touched.
Weak.
But there.
Lira let go.
“Run,” she said.
He ran.
She bought more.
Walked out the other side of the market.
Into the back alleys.
That was where she heard it.
Whispering.
Not from people.
From the book.
She ducked into a dead-end.
Pulled it out.
The wrapping was gone.
The book was open.
To a new page.
`TWO`
Just that.
And under it, a shape.
A star.
With a crack through the middle.
The star pulsed once.
Then ink spread from it.
Forming words.
`MARKET. EAST WALL.`
`HE HAS IT. HE DOESN'T KNOW.`
`THE HOLLOW ARE TWO STREETS AWAY.`
Lira looked up.
The alley was empty.
She ran.
East wall.
She knew it.
Old brick.
Covered in posters.
And behind it, the boy from the market.
He was sitting.
Hugging his knees.
Shaking.
In his hands, a shard.
Glass.
But it was glowing.
Blue.
Like the light from the book.
Two Guild men turned the corner.
Lira didn’t think.
She grabbed the boy.
Pulled him up.
“Move.”
They ran.
Down the alley.
Over a fence.
Through a laundry.
Out into the street.
The Guild didn’t follow.
Not yet.
They stopped in an abandoned shop.
Windows boarded.
Dust everywhere.
The boy was crying.
Not loud.
Just shaking.
“What is this,” he whispered.
Holding up the shard.
Lira looked at the book.
New words.
`SHARD OF A FALLEN STAR`
`HE IS STAR-TOUCHED`
`CLASS: ECHO`
`HE CAN HEAR THINGS THAT AREN'T THERE`
Lira closed the book.
Looked at the boy.
“How old are you”
“Fourteen,” he said.
“What’s your name”
“Jem.”
Jem looked at the shard.
Then at her.
“You’re not with them. Are you”
“No.”
“Then why did you help me”
Lira didn’t have an answer.
The book had told her to.
She opened it again.
`KEEP HIM`
`HE IS THE SECOND`
`THERE ARE FORTY-THREE LEFT`
Lira swore under her breath.
Jem heard it.
“Forty-three what”
“Nothing,” Lira said.
“Can you walk”
He nodded.
They moved.
Through back streets.
Through holes in fences.
Through places the Guild didn’t watch.
Jem didn’t ask questions.
He just kept looking at the shard.
It was getting brighter.
By midday they were at the docks.
Old docks.
No ships came anymore.
Water was too low.
There was a warehouse.
Open.
Inside, people.
Not many.
Sleeping.
Hiding.
A man at the door stopped them.
Big.
Scar across his face.
“Who”
“Lira,” she said.
“From the market.”
He looked at Jem.
At the shard.
His eyes narrowed.
“You got a runner.”
“He’s with me.”
The man stepped aside.
Inside smelled like salt and rust.
Lira found a corner.
Sat.
Jem sat next to her.
He was still holding the shard.
Lira pulled out the book.
New page.
`THE HOLLOW KNOW`
`THEY ARE COMING TO THE DOCKS`
`YOU HAVE UNTIL NIGHT`
Then under that.
`THREE IS NEAR`
`FOLLOW THE SOUND OF WATER THAT ISN’T THERE`
Lira looked at Jem.
“Can you hear water”
He frowned.
“I hear a lot of things.”
He tilted his head.
“There. Dripping. But there’s no pipes here.”
He stood.
Walked to the back of the warehouse.
To a wall.
He put his hand on it.
“Behind here.”
Lira knocked.
Hollow.
She pulled out the knife.
Started prying at a loose board.
The man with the scar came over.
“Guild’s coming,” he said.
“Ten minutes.”
Lira worked faster.
The board came off.
Behind it, a small room.
And in it, a girl.
Maybe twelve.
Sitting.
Eyes closed.
Hands over her ears.
Water was dripping from the ceiling.
But there was no ceiling leak.
The girl opened her eyes.
Looked at Lira.
Looked at Jem.
Looked at the shard.
She smiled.
“You’re loud,” she said.
“I could hear you coming.”
Lira held out her hand.
“Come on.”
The girl took it.
The book pulsed.
`THREE`
`CLASS: SIREN`
`SHE CAN HEAR THROUGH WALLS. THROUGH PEOPLE. THROUGH TIME.`
Guild boots hit the floor outside.
“Move,” the scarred man said.
They moved.
Out the back.
Into the water.
Knee deep.
Mud.
Behind them, shouting.
They didn’t stop until they were under another bridge.
Farther down.
The girl sat down immediately.
Put her hands over her ears again.
“It’s too loud,” she whispered.
Jem sat next to her.
Held out the shard.
“Does this help”
She took it.
The glow dimmed.
She breathed out.
“Yeah.”
Lira sat across from them.
Pulled out the book.
Three names now.
Written in silver.
`LIRA VANE`
`JEM`
`MIRA`
Under them.
`FORTY-TWO REMAIN`
Mira looked at the book.
“You can read that”
“Sort of,” Lira said.
“It talks,” Mira said.
“I can hear it. Even when it’s closed.”
Lira closed it fast.
Footsteps above.
On the bridge.
All three of them went still.
The footsteps stopped.
Then moved on.
Lira let out a breath.
She opened the book again.
New writing.
`GOOD`
`NOW YOU HAVE TO HIDE`
`AND YOU HAVE TO FIND`
`THE HOLLOW HAVE A LIST TOO`
`THEY WILL KILL THEM BEFORE YOU FIND THEM`
Lira’s hands went cold.
Jem looked at her.
“What”
“They’re hunting them,” Lira said.
“The other forty-two.”
Mira pulled the shard closer.
“Then we have to be faster.”
Lira nodded.
The book turned a page by itself.
A map.
Drawn in light.
Of New Kess.
And outside it.
With dots.
Forty-two dots.
Scattered.
One was blinking.
Far north.
Outside the city walls.
`FOUR`
`THE LIBRARIAN`
`HE DOESN’T KNOW HE HAS IT`
Lira looked at Jem.
At Mira.
“We’re leaving the city.”
Jem nodded.
Mira nodded.
Above them, the bridge was quiet again.
Lira stood.
Tied the book to her bag.
Tighter this time.
“The Hollow have more people than us,” she said.
“They have guns. They have scanners.”
She looked at the two kids.
“But they don’t have this.”
She tapped the book.
It pulsed.
Warm.
From somewhere far, a bell rang.
Guild curfew.
Night was coming.
Lira started walking.
Jem followed.
Mira followed.
Behind them, the warehouse was being searched.
In front of them, the city gates.
And beyond that, forty-two more names.
The book flipped to the last page.
Blank.
Except for one line at the bottom.
`DO NOT LET THE LAST PAGE BE WRITTEN BY THEM`
Lira didn’t know what that meant.
But she was going to find out.
They reached the gate at midnight.
Guards were there.
Two of them.
Bored.
Lira stepped forward.
“Trade papers,” she said.
Held out fake ones.
The guard scanned them.
Looked at Jem.
Looked at Mira.
Looked at the bag.
“Open it.”
Lira did.
Knife.
Food.
Rope.
No book.
It was under her shirt again.
The guard waved them through.
Outside the walls, it was darker.
No lights.
Just stars.
The real ones.
The ones that hadn’t fallen.
Mira stopped.
Looked up.
“The book is warm,” she said.
Lira felt it too.
Jem pointed north.
“There.”
In the distance.
A light.
Small.
In a window.
A library.
Alone on the plain.
The book flipped again.
`FOUR`
`GO`
Lira ran.
The kids ran with her.
Behind them, in New Kess,
the Guild tower light turned red.
They had been seen.
Ahead, the library waited.
And inside it,
someone who didn’t know they were being hunted.
Lira pulled the knife out.
Just in case.
The book was heavy.
And it was getting heavier.
Because every name it wrote,
made it want to write more.
