The library had no sign.
Just stone.
Two floors.
Windows dark.
A single light on the second floor.
Lira stopped at the tree line.
Jem stopped next to her.
Mira stopped behind them both.
No fence.
No guards.
Just the building and the field around it.
The book in Lira’s bag was hot.
Not burning.
Warm.
Like it was breathing.
`FOUR`
`THE LIBRARIAN`
`HE DOESN’T KNOW HE HAS IT`
That was all it said.
Jem shifted.
“I can hear someone,” he whispered.
“Reading. Out loud. But there’s no sound.”
Mira pressed her hands to her ears.
“Me too. It’s a story. About stars.”
Lira looked at the light.
It wasn’t moving.
No shadow crossed it.
“Okay,” she said.
“We go slow. We don’t touch anything. We don’t tell him who we are. Not yet.”
They crossed the field.
Grass up to their knees.
No path.
Like no one came here.
The door was wood.
Old.
No lock.
Lira pushed it.
It opened.
Inside smelled like paper and dust and cold.
Shelves everywhere.
Floor to ceiling.
Ladders.
Tables.
Chairs.
And books.
Thousands of them.
The light was from a lamp on the second floor.
On a balcony.
A man sat there.
Back to them.
Reading.
He didn’t look up.
Lira stepped in.
Jem and Mira followed.
The door closed behind them by itself.
The man still didn’t look up.
Lira cleared her throat.
“Hello”
The man turned a page.
“Library is closed,” he said.
Voice calm.
Old.
“We’re not here for books,” Lira said.
“Everyone is here for books,” he said.
He turned another page.
Jem looked at Lira.
Mira looked at the shelves.
Her hands were shaking.
The book in Lira’s bag pulsed.
Hard.
Lira pulled it out.
Kept it low.
New words.
`HE HAS IT IN HIS POCKET`
`A SHARD`
`HE THINKS IT’S A PAPERWEIGHT`
Lira looked up at the balcony.
The man’s coat was on the chair next to him.
Something in the pocket.
Catching the lamplight.
Blue.
Lira put the book away.
“We need help,” she said.
Louder.
The man finally looked down.
He had gray hair.
Glasses.
Eyes that looked like he’d read too much.
“You’re not from the Guild,” he said.
It wasn’t a question.
“No,” Lira said.
“Then you’re in danger here.”
He stood.
Came down the stairs.
Slow.
Didn’t look scared.
He stopped in front of them.
Looked at Jem.
Looked at Mira.
Looked at Lira.
“You’re carrying something,” he said.
“Something that doesn’t want to be found.”
Lira didn’t answer.
The man reached into his pocket.
Pulled out the shard.
Small.
Blue.
Cut like glass.
“I found this in a book last winter,” he said.
“Thought it was pretty.”
He held it out.
“Is it yours”
Jem made a sound.
Like he’d been hit.
Mira grabbed Lira’s arm.
The book in Lira’s bag jumped.
Lira took the shard.
The second her fingers touched it, the lights went out.
All of them.
The lamp.
The moon through the windows.
Everything.
Dark.
Then the shard lit up.
In Lira’s hand.
Bright.
And the book flew out of her bag by itself.
Hovering.
Open.
Pages turning fast.
Too fast to read.
The man didn’t move.
He just watched.
The book stopped.
On a new page.
`FOUR`
`ELIAS VARN`
`CLASS: ARCHIVIST`
`HE REMEMBERS WHAT THE WORLD FORGOT`
The name burned, then faded.
The lights came back.
Elias blinked.
Looked at his empty hand.
Looked at Lira.
Looked at the book.
“Well,” he said.
“That explains the dreams.”
Lira closed the book.
“It’s dangerous,” she said.
“The Hollow are looking for it. For you. For all of us.”
Elias nodded.
“I know.”
He gestured to the chairs.
“Sit. You look like you haven’t slept.”
They sat.
Elias made tea.
Real tea.
Not the dust from the market.
He didn’t ask questions while the water boiled.
When he set the cups down, he sat too.
“Alright,” he said.
“Tell me what the book said.”
Lira told him.
About the observatory.
About the names.
About the forty-two.
About the Hollow.
Elias listened.
Didn’t interrupt.
When she finished, he picked up the shard from the table.
Turned it in his fingers.
“I’ve been here twenty years,” he said.
“Since the Fracture. Since the stars fell.”
He looked at the shelves.
“I thought I was the only one who remembered how it was before.”
Mira was drinking tea too fast.
Jem was staring at the shard.
Elias set it down.
“It sings,” he said.
“At night. When no one is here. It sings to the books.”
Lira pulled out the book.
Opened it.
New writing.
`ELIAS IS SAFE FOR NOW`
`THE HOLLOW DO NOT KNOW HE IS HERE`
`BUT THEY WILL`
`YOU HAVE TO MOVE`
Lira showed him.
Elias read it.
Nodded.
“Then we move.”
He stood.
Went to a shelf.
Pulled a book.
The shelf moved.
A door.
Behind it, stairs.
Down.
“Basement,” he said.
“I don’t use it. Too many ghosts.”
They went down.
The basement was bigger than the library above.
Tunnels.
Crates.
Old maps.
And in the center, a table.
With a circle carved into it.
Seven points.
The same as the observatory.
Elias stopped.
“That wasn’t here before.”
The book opened by itself again.
`THE CODEX REMEMBERS PLACES`
`THIS IS THE SECOND DOOR`
`THERE ARE FIVE MORE`
Lira looked at Elias.
“You know about the doors”
He shook his head.
“I know about stories. And every story has doors.”
Footsteps.
Above.
On the floor of the library.
Heavy.
Boots.
Elias blew out the lamp.
Dark again.
Jem grabbed Lira’s sleeve.
“I hear them. Four. Maybe five.”
Mira was already at the far wall.
Listening.
“Guild,” she whispered.
“They know he’s here.”
Elias moved fast for an old man.
He pulled crates aside.
Revealed another door.
Metal.
“Service tunnel,” he said.
“Leads to the river. Two miles.”
He opened it.
Cold air came out.
“Go,” he said.
“I’ll slow them down.”
Lira shook her head.
“You come too.”
“I can’t,” Elias said.
“If I run, they burn the library.
If I stay, they might only take me.”
He smiled.
Small.
Tired.
“I’ve read enough endings to know which one hurts less people.”
He pushed them toward the tunnel.
Jem went first.
Mira went second.
Lira went last.
Elias closed the door behind them.
They ran.
The tunnel was dark.
Wet.
Sound of water ahead.
Behind them, shouting.
Then a crash.
Then nothing.
Lira didn’t look back.
They came out at the river.
Low water.
Rocks.
Elias was not there.
Jem sat on a rock.
Head in his hands.
“I could hear him,” he said.
“They took him.”
Mira didn’t cry.
She just stared at the water.
Lira opened the book.
New page.
`FOUR`
`ELIAS VARN`
`STATUS: TAKEN`
`FORTY-ONE REMAIN`
Under that.
`DO NOT BLAME YOURSELF`
`HE CHOSE THIS`
`NOW CHOOSE WHAT YOU DO NEXT`
Lira closed the book.
The shard was still in her hand.
It was cold now.
She put it in the bag.
Next to the book.
“We keep going,” she said.
Jem looked up.
“Where”
Lira looked at the map in the book.
Forty-one dots.
One was moving.
West.
Fast.
“Someone’s running,” she said.
“From the Hollow.”
Mira stood.
“I can hear them.
A girl.
She’s scared.”
Lira nodded.
“Then that’s where we go.”
They started walking.
Along the river.
Away from the library.
Away from the lights.
Behind them, smoke rose from the library.
They didn’t look back.
The book pulsed once.
Warm.
And on a new page, in silver,
a new name started to write itself.
Slow.
Letter by letter.
`FIVE`
