Escape From The Shadows

The prison shook with another deafening explosion.

Concrete dust rained from the ceiling as alarms screamed through every corridor. Red emergency lights flashed wildly, bathing the walls in a crimson glow. Prisoners shouted from their cells, pounding on the iron bars while guards ran in every direction, trying to regain control.

Ethan tightened his grip around the small brass key Victor had slid across the table.

"What is happening?" he demanded.

Victor remained surprisingly calm.

"The beginning," he replied. "The Circle believes chaos is the perfect disguise."

Another blast echoed from the prison yard.

The lights flickered, then went out.

Darkness swallowed the visitation room.

Only the faint glow of emergency lights remained.

A metallic click echoed behind Ethan.

The visitation room door slowly unlocked.

Victor smiled.

"Go."

Ethan hesitated.

"If I run, they'll call me a fugitive."

Victor looked him straight in the eye.

"They already stole your life. Stop worrying about what they'll call you."

Outside, terrified guards rushed past without noticing the unlocked door.

Ethan slipped into the hallway.

Smoke curled through the air, making it difficult to breathe. Somewhere nearby, gunfire erupted.

A prisoner tackled a guard to the floor, grabbing his radio before disappearing into the smoke.

The entire prison had become a battlefield.

Following Victor's instructions, Ethan headed toward the maintenance tunnels beneath the east wing.

Every step brought back memories of the three years he had spent inside these walls—years of beatings, betrayal, and loneliness.

He had entered prison believing justice would save him.

Now he understood that justice had been sold to the highest bidder.

As he reached the maintenance door, he inserted the brass key.

The lock clicked open.

Inside waited a narrow tunnel lit by dim yellow bulbs.

Footsteps echoed behind him.

"Ethan!"

He turned instantly.

Victor stood at the entrance.

"You don't have much time."

He handed Ethan a black backpack.

"Everything you need is inside."

Ethan opened it.

Bundles of cash.

A passport bearing a different name.

A smartphone.

Several sets of clothes.

And a black notebook.

"What's this?"

Victor's expression hardened.

"The notebook contains names, dates, and transactions I've collected for over twenty years."

"If anything happens to me, you must protect it."

Before Ethan could respond, armed men dressed in black tactical gear stormed into the corridor.

They weren't prison guards.

They moved with military precision.

One of them shouted, "Target located!"

Victor's face went pale.

"They found us."

He pushed Ethan deeper into the tunnel.

"Run!"

Gunfire exploded through the hallway.

Bullets ricocheted off the concrete walls.

Ethan looked back just long enough to see Victor standing between him and the attackers.

"Go!" Victor shouted.

With a heavy heart, Ethan sprinted through the tunnel.

He could still hear the gunfire behind him.

Then—

Silence.

He stopped running.

His chest tightened.

Victor was gone.

The man who had given him hope had sacrificed himself to keep that hope alive.

Ethan closed his eyes for a brief moment.

"I won't let your death be meaningless," he whispered.

"I'll finish what my father started."

At the end of the tunnel, a rusted steel ladder led to a storm drain outside the prison walls.

He climbed quickly.

Rain poured from the night sky as he emerged into a dense forest overlooking the prison.

Sirens echoed in the distance.

Searchlights swept across the trees.

Dogs barked somewhere below.

Ethan pulled up the hood of his jacket and disappeared into the darkness.

For the first time in three years...

He was free.

But freedom came with a price.

From this moment forward, every police officer in the country would be hunting him.

And somewhere in the shadows...

The Circle already knew he had escaped.
