The Ghost File

The maintenance tunnel stretched for what felt like miles.

Water dripped steadily from cracked pipes overhead, and the air smelled of rust and damp concrete. Ethan kept moving, his flashlight cutting through the darkness.

The explosion at the warehouse had bought him time—but not much.

The Circle would already be searching every road, every train station, and every security camera in the city.

He needed to disappear.

At the end of the tunnel, he pushed open a rusted hatch and emerged into an abandoned subway station. The platforms were deserted, swallowed by years of neglect.

He climbed the broken stairs and stepped into the cool night air.

Across the street, an old motel flickered beneath a failing neon sign.

It wasn't safe.

But it was the only place where he could regroup.

Inside Room 12, Ethan locked the door, closed the curtains, and placed Victor's laptop on the small wooden table.

He opened the folder labeled PROJECT PHOENIX once more.

This time, he noticed something he had missed before.

One file remained locked.

Its name was simple.

GHOST.

He tried several passwords.

Nothing.

Frustrated, he leaned back in the chair.

Then he remembered his father's final words.

"Don't seek revenge. Seek the truth."

Truth.

He typed the word.

The file opened.

His eyes widened.

Inside were scanned documents connecting The Circle to money laundering, illegal weapons shipments, political assassinations, and the disappearance of dozens of journalists.

There were names.

Dates.

Bank transfers.

Photographs.

Enough evidence to destroy powerful people.

Then he reached the final page.

At the bottom was a handwritten sentence.

There is a traitor inside The Circle. Find Raven.

"Raven..." Ethan whispered.

"Who are you?"

Just then, his phone vibrated.

He froze.

No one should know he had this phone.

The screen displayed an unknown number.

After a long pause, he answered.

Silence.

Then a calm female voice spoke.

"If you're Ethan Cole, don't hang up."

His grip tightened.

"Who is this?"

"I can't tell you my name."

"How did you get this number?"

"I worked with Victor Harrington."

Ethan's heart skipped.

"Victor is dead."

"I know."

"They killed him."

The woman's voice faltered for only a second before becoming steady again.

"He knew they would."

Ethan remained silent.

"You have something they want," she continued.

"The Ghost File."

"How do you know about it?"

"Because I helped create it."

Before Ethan could ask another question, she said something that sent a chill through his body.

"They're already inside the motel."

The call ended.

A floorboard creaked outside his room.

Ethan quietly closed the laptop.

Someone stopped outside his door.

Three slow knocks echoed through the room.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

No one spoke.

The doorknob began to turn.

Locked.

A second later, Ethan heard the faint metallic sound of lock-picking tools sliding into place.

He backed away from the door, pistol raised, his pulse steady.

Whoever was outside wasn't a police officer.

They had come for one thing.

The Ghost File.

And this time...

They weren't planning to leave any witnesses alive.
