Chapter 3: The Breach of Aegis Tower

The rain on the streets outside was muffled to a low, rhythmic thudding against the thick, reinforced concrete walls of the sub-basement garage.

Vance stood in the shadow of a massive concrete structural pillar, his frame perfectly still. His dark-grey, faceless cowl absorbed the dim fluorescent light of the parking bay. Ahead of him, thirty meters away, was the primary security checkpoint for the Aegis Tower's private elevator bay.

Two guards stood by the bulletproof glass kiosk, their eyes locked onto a bank of closed-circuit monitors. They wore heavy tactical vests, sidearms strapped to their thighs, and communication headsets clipped to their collars. Two more patrolled the perimeter, moving in a synchronized counter-clockwise loop around rows of parked luxury sedans.

Vance checked the heavy-duty friction tape on his forearms. He didn't have a firearm drawn. In an enclosed concrete space like this, the acoustic resonance of a single gunshot would immediately trigger the building's automated safety protocols, dropping steel blast doors across every exit route.

To clear the floor, he had to rely on pure, silent kinetic control.

He timed the perimeter patrol. The two walking guards crossed paths behind a massive black SUV every forty-two seconds. That was his window.

When the trailing guard turned his back, Vance blurred forward. He didn't run; he used a low, gliding stride that kept his center of gravity constant, preventing his heavy boots from squeaking against the polished epoxy floor.

He closed the distance in four seconds.

Before the guard could register a change in air pressure, Vance reached out, his left hand clamping firmly over the man's mouth while his right arm looped under the guard's chin, securing a precise rear-naked choke. Vance applied immediate pressure to the carotid arteries, cutting off blood flow to the brain. Within four seconds, the guard's posture went completely limp, slipping unconscious into Vance's grip before he could ever reach for his radio transceiver.

Vance lowered the unconscious man silently behind the rear tire of the SUV, stripping the radio from his vest and slipping it onto his own utility belt.

The second patrolling guard rounded the hood of the vehicle, his flashlight beam slicing through the dark. "Hey, Section 2, what's your status?" he muttered into his mic.

He didn't get an answer.

Vance stepped out from the shadow of the SUV, directly into the guard's line of sight. The man's eyes widened, his hand instantly dropping toward his holster.

Too slow.

Vance intercepted the draw. His left hand slapped down heavily on the guard's wrist, locking the gun inside the holster, while his right elbow snapped upward in a sharp, horizontal arc, striking the guard cleanly across the jaw. The impact rattled the man's equilibrium, sending him stumbling backward.

Vance didn't let him recover his balance. He stepped inside the guard's defensive line, caught him by the tactical vest, and executed a sweeping hip throw, slamming the man flat onto the concrete. The wind rushed out of the guard's lungs in a quiet gasp, and a quick, targeted strike to the temple ensured he wouldn't be waking up anytime soon.

Two down. Two remaining inside the glass kiosk.

Vance picked up the second guard's flashlight and clicked it on, angling it downward toward the floor to mimic a routine patrol movement as he walked directly toward the security booth.

Inside the kiosk, one of the guards looked up from his monitor, squinting through the glass. "Hey, what are you doing over there? Is the gate sensor acting up again?"

Vance didn't answer. He kept his head down, the lip of his dark hood completely obscuring his features as he approached the heavy steel door of the booth. He tapped the aluminum body of the flashlight rhythmically against the glass—three sharp clicks. It was a universal tactical signal among the syndicate to open up for an immediate briefing.

The guard inside frowned, reaching over to hit the electronic release toggle. Click-clack. The heavy door unlatched.

Vance threw the door open.

The first guard inside tried to draw his weapon, but Vance was already across the threshold. He seized the guard's extended arm, twisting the wrist outward to force a mechanical joint lock that disarmed him instantly. Using the guard's own momentum, Vance propelled him forward into the main control console, smashing his head into the keyboard and knocking him out cold.

The final guard scrambled backward, his back hitting the wall as he raised his hands in a defensive boxing guard, throwing a sharp jab at Vance's face.

Vance deflected the punch with an inside forearm block, slipped his head to the left, and delivered a devastating three-hit combination to the guard's torso: a liver shot, a solar plexus strike, and a heavy knee to the midsection. The guard collapsed to his knees, completely incapacitated, clutching his ribs as his breath failed him.

Vance stood over the control console. The sub-basement was completely secured, and not a single alarm had been raised to the upper floors.

He reached over, picked up the master biometric bypass card sitting on the desk, and turned his gaze toward the dark express elevator doors.

The ground floor was clear. The ascent was next.
