The express elevator doors remained sealed, their brushed-steel surfaces reflecting the dim fluorescent glow of the secured sub-basement. Vance didn't look at them twice. To take the primary elevator was to place oneself inside a moving metal box with a single, highly predictable exit point. The syndicate handlers on the upper floors would have the doors covered by heavy crossfire the moment the indicator light blinked.
Instead, Vance moved toward a heavy, unmarked steel door labeled Utility Access 01. He slid the captured biometric bypass card through the wall-mounted reader. The mechanism beeped twice, a green LED illuminated, and the heavy pneumatic seal hissed open.
Beyond the door lay the building's spine: a massive, echoing vertical shaft plunging hundreds of meters up into the dark. Thick bundles of fiber-optic cables, high-voltage power lines, and massive HVAC climate-control ducts ran parallel along the concrete walls like the exposed veins of a mechanical beast. Far above, the faint, rhythmic hum of the building's central filtration system vibrated through the steel framework.
Vance stepped onto the narrow iron grating of the maintenance platform. He looked up, calculating the geometry of the ascent.
He uncoiled the steel-core climbing rope from his shoulder harness. Bypassing the first twelve floors via the interior ladder would be too slow and would leave him exposed in a straight vertical line if a patrol looked down. He needed speed, but more importantly, he needed friction control.
He snapped the twin mechanical ascenders onto the heavy guide cables running alongside the elevator tracks. He wrapped his hands securely around the rubberized grips, checking the teeth of the locking cams. They bit into the steel wire with a sharp, reassuring clack.
With a rhythmic, synchronized movement of his core and upper body, Vance began his ascent. He didn't climb using raw arm strength; he used his legs to drive his weight upward, sliding the mechanical clamps higher with every explosive extension of his hips. The high-tensile friction tape wrapped around his forearms shielded his skin against the abrasive heat radiating from the high-voltage conduits running less than six inches from his shoulders.
By the time he passed the sixth floor, his breathing remained perfectly regulated—shallow, even inhalations through his nose beneath the faceless grey cowl.
Suddenly, a metallic scrape echoed from above.
Vance froze, his muscles instantly locking into a isometric hold against the guide cable. He shifted his weight smoothly, pressing his entire body flat against the damp concrete wall, letting his dark tactical gear blend into the shadows of the wiring bundles.
Ten meters above, a rectangular hatch on the side of the shaft creaked open. The sharp, bright beam of a high-intensity tactical flashlight cut through the dark of the shaft, sweeping across the cable lines.
"Central, this is Sweep Team 3," a voice crackled from a radio just above Vance. "Checking the secondary utility lines on Floor 8. We heard a resonance spike in the cable tension."
Two men. Vance caught the silhouette of their tactical helmets against the light of the open hatch. They were looking down, but the flashlight beam was focused on the center tracks, passing right over Vance's obscured position in the corner shadow.
"Negative, Sweep 3," the radio replied. "Main grid shows no power fluctuations. Keep moving."
"Copy that."
The guard holding the flashlight leaned slightly further into the shaft to check the lower brackets.
Vance didn't wait for the beam to swing back. He released the manual lock on his left ascender, letting his body drop exactly two feet in a controlled, vertical slide. The sudden, silent drop put him directly beneath the protruding arm of the guard.
