Chapter 5 The Server Loop

The transition from the raw, echoing concrete of the utility shaft to the carpeted hallways of the 12th floor was seamless. Vance stepped through the ventilation access panel, lowering his feet silently onto the floor. He immediately dropped into a low crouch, utilizing the geometric shadow of a heavy water-cooler unit to mask his presence.

He adjusted his dark-grey, faceless cowl, a tactical preference that ensured his eyes, mouth, and expressions remained completely invisible to his targets, denying them any ability to read his intent or anticipate his next movement. To any camera or opponent, he was simply an ominous, featureless void.

The 12th floor was dead silent, save for the low, rhythmic electronic hum radiating from behind the double-reinforced security doors of the server room at the end of the hall.

Vance checked the corridor's ceiling. Two automated dome cameras were mounted at opposite ends, sweeping in alternating 180-degree arcs. The blind spot occurred exactly every fourteen seconds, right where the two camera fields overlappingly retracted.

He didn't run. He timed his step precisely with the mechanical tick of the camera casing, moving down the left wall with a fluid, measured stride.

As he neared the server room door, the handle clicked. The electronic lock flashed green.

Vance didn't retreat. He instantly pressed his back against the wall directly on the hinge side of the opening door.

An elite tactical operator stepped out into the corridor, holding a tablet in his left hand, checking diagnostic logs. Because Vance had positioned himself on the dead side of the door's arc, the opening panel completely blocked the operator's peripheral vision.

The moment the operator stepped past the frame, Vance acted.

He didn't use a weapon. He hooked his right hand behind the operator's neck, driving his momentum forward while his left hand clamped onto the operator's wrist, trapping the tablet against the man's chest to prevent it from dropping and making noise. Using a precise counter-balance pivot, Vance dragged the operator backward into the server room before the door could close behind them.

Inside the server room, two more operators were stationed at the primary diagnostic desks. They spun around at the sudden motion, their handguns half-cleared from their high-ride tactical holsters.

Vance used his current captive as a physical obstruction. He shoved the first operator violently into the second one, tangling their limbs and throwing off their drawing vectors.

The third operator, sitting on the far right, managed to clear his weapon and bring the barrel up.

Vance closed the distance in a fraction of a second. Instead of trying to block the firearm directly, he stepped outside the operator's shooting line—a classic slip to the dead angle. His left hand slapped the top of the operator's slide, forcing the weapon downward, while his right palm struck upward into the operator's chin. The clean, solid kinetic transfer snapped the man's head back, destabilizing his inner ear equilibrium.

Following the strike immediately, Vance seized the operator's extended arm, wrapping his own forearm over the man's elbow joint to apply a brutal standing armlock (Waki-Gatame). With a downward torque of his hips, he forced the operator to the floor, disarming him cleanly and securing a heavy nerve-compression pinch to the shoulder that rendered the limb useless.

Behind him, the two tangled operators were scrambling back to their feet. One of them abandoned his firearm, opting for a tactical short-blade, stepping forward with a lightning-fast diagonal slash aimed at Vance's throat.

Vance didn't back away. Retreating meant giving up the center line.

He stepped into the slash, intercepting the operator's forearm before the blade could reach its full velocity. He executed a sharp, inside-out wrist manipulation (Kote Gaeshi), twisting the operator's hand against its natural joint alignment. The sudden, intense torque forced the knife from the man's fingers. Vance instantly transitioned the hold into a sweeping shoulder throw, sending the operator crashing heavily into the metal server racks. The impact against the steel structure knocked the consciousness clean out of him.

The remaining operator raised his hands to engage in close-quarters combat, throwing a heavy, straight right hand.

Vance parried the punch outward with a swift deflection of his left forearm, ducked under a follow-up left hook, and planted a solid, perfectly placed palm strike directly into the operator's solar plexus. The air left the man's lungs in a sharp, quiet wheeze. Before the operator could drop, Vance secured a tight collar grip, turned his back, and executed a precise shoulder throw (Seoi Nage), landing the man flat on his back on the anti-static floor matting. A quick, targeted pressure-point strike to the side of the neck ensured the operator remained unconscious.

The room went quiet again, save for the steady whirring of thousands of server cooling fans.

Vance walked over to the primary terminal desk, his movements calm and entirely devoid of adrenaline fatigue. He pulled a compact flash drive from his utility belt, slotted it into the main server port, and watched the progress bar clear.

On the wall monitors, the live camera feeds for floors 13 through 25 suddenly stuttered, froze, and restarted in a perfect, pre-recorded loop. To the security handlers in the main control room upstairs, the corridors looked completely empty.

Vance pulled the drive, turned back toward the server room's secondary exit hatch leading to the main ventilation nexus, and stepped back into the shadows.

The middle tier was blind. The hunt continued upward.
