Chapter 2: Alexanderplatz at Midnight

The bright neon lights of Alexanderplatz looked very different from the dark streets Silas had just come from. Usually, the square was busy with many people, even late at night. Now, it was very quiet. Only a few people were walking around, and the streets were watched carefully by drones flying above and police officers standing nearby. The System wanted to look like everything was perfect and under control, but Silas could see the cracks. People looked scared, walking quickly and whispering quietly. It was like a stage, and everyone had to play their part.

Silas looked around carefully. His eyes and ears were alert. He was waiting for a sign, a message, that would tell him where Ember was. But all he saw were the cameras, their lenses shining like eyes watching him, and the drones humming above. The air felt heavy, like he was being watched all the time.

He moved closer to the World Clock, an old monument from the past. Its bright colors stood out against the gray city. This was the place they had agreed to meet. It was a symbol of the old times, before the System took over. Silas leaned against the clock, trying to hide in the shadows. His heart was pounding. He was nervous and unsure. Was this a trap? Did the System know he was coming? Or was Ember real, or just a story?

He was about to give up and go back into the shadows, when something moved in the corner of his eye. A figure stepped out from the darkness near the Fernsehturm, the tall TV tower that watched over the city. The person moved smoothly, quietly, and purposefully. Their face was covered by a hood, making them even more mysterious.

Silas’s breath caught. Was this Ember? Or someone else? Someone dangerous? He wasn’t sure. But he knew he had to find out. He pushed off the clock and stepped forward, eyes fixed on the approaching figure.

As the person got closer, Silas could see more details. They were tall and thin, moving with strength and grace. Their cloak was dark, almost black, blending into the night. Their steps were quiet and confident. And then, he saw it—a tiny emblem on their sleeve, a small flame. It was simple but clear, like a sign.

Could this be Ember?

He took a small step closer and whispered, “Ember?”

The figure stopped. Their head tilted slightly, listening carefully. For a moment, everything was quiet. The hum of the drones and the distant sirens faded into the background. Then, the person spoke softly, their voice gentle and calm, cutting through the noise of the city.

“Specter,” they said. “I’ve been waiting for you.”

Silas felt a shiver run down his spine. He wasn’t sure what to say or do. His mind was full of questions. Who was this person? Was it Ember? Or someone else? Was this a trap? Or was this the start of something new?

The person in front of him looked calm, but Silas could see a hint of a smile under the hood. There was something about her—something strong and brave. She didn’t look afraid, even in the dark and quiet square. She was waiting for him, and now, everything was about to change.

To be continued.
